would a 1976 engine just drop into a '72 108?

What would have to be done to make an engine from a 1976 450SEL work in a 1972 280SEL 4.5? I am just curious. Would the '76 have hydraulic valves? If it did would everything still just plug right in? Was there any different gearing in the 116, such as diff or tranny?
Thanks
David

You will either have to change the heads to the 72 ones to keep the D-jetronic, or change the fuel pump and lines to the K-jetronic system. Otherwise its a straight replacement.

For that matter, if you snag the electronics at the same time, you can drop a 560 in there, it will fit exactly.

Six of one, half dozen of the other. I was planning on doing both, sort of, before I got the block fixed in the 280 -- going for the K-Jet but using the cams from the D-Jet engine.

You have to change the exhaust manifolds anyway, the ones on the W116 won't work on the W108.

If you had electronics or injector problems with the D-Jet, I'd for sure drop the K-jet in.

What do you mean by the lines? Fuel lines or electronics?

K-Jet uses a 75 psi pump, with accumulator and steel braid covered fuel lines, the D-Jet uses a 28 psi pump and regular fuel hoses with aircraft clamps. You must replace the low pressure type hoses with steel braid hoses or they will blow off.
