Transmission seal leaks on my '72 280 SE
I have a friend who says he can probably fix it so I don't have to pay high cost mechanic. Never worked on MB's before, but is a mechanic...Any feed back? Is this somethkng that should be done by a mechanic with MB background?
Thanks in advance.. |

Which seal?
If it's the front, you need to know that the easiest way to remove the tranny is to take the entire engine and tranny out the top, then remove tranny from engine. Bell housing bolts are almost impossible to reach from underneath. Peter

It is the front seal... The local MB shop said about $700 to fix if that was the problem...Mostly labor is my guess from having to take out entire engine & tranny...Too much work (difficult)for a DIY'er?
Thanks |

If you can get the car up on a lift, have a good set of long extensions and universal sockets, and have a hydraulic transmission jack available, you can do it without removing the engine. Do not even think about doing it on jackstands.
There is nothing special about the removal and installation - any good trans shop or general mechanic should be able to do it.
