Just acquired - 1977 280 SL (Euro)

New to this forum - just inherited a 1977 280 SL (Euro), body restored by Dad. She is in GREAT body shape, red, gorgeous, I am VERY lucky!

Anyone else out there with a similar model?

Currently having engine issues (as in, she died on the road between Dad's house in MA and mine in Chicago).

Basically, she dies at low speeds or idle. And eventually, never restarted. So I have a winter project.

So introducing myself and saying HELLO, looks like a great forum!

Let me guess - its got the 280 twin cam 6 with mechanical fuel injection and 4 spd stick shift??

Thats one helluva car - sounds identical to my '77 Euro 280SEL...

Welcome to the Vintage Forum!

That is a great car. More nimble than the 450/380 V8's.

I would guess that the problem is fuel-related, especially if the car has not been driven regularly. There are lots of posts on how to test the fuel system. If you are getting fuel, then move on to spark. You will soon find the problem and be on the road again.

There's one in my neighborhood

here in Williamsburg, pristine looking body and owned by an elderly couple who rarely move it out of their driveway. I covet my neighbors' goods over that one almost every day on the way home from work, since I like the looks of that series, but don't like the front-heavy, Mustang-like feel of the V8 models.

I like the feel of the front-heavy 4.5 I have personally. I'll probably enjoy it even more when I do my subframe mounts ASAP and my swaybar bushings some point in the future. I love the feeling it gets diving in corners at high speeds and sticks like glue!

Talking

Hi guys - thanks for the welcome!

The only pic I have on the computer is her on the flatbed, coming back from Indiana (after she never started again).

She is CUTE, love her to death, and thanks for the tips. We have 2 engineers in the house, plus a 3rd engineer friend who eats here, and we are ALL over her.

Hopefully, we can track it down, but I am afraid it is the mechanical fuel injectors. In what little discussion I have had with those familiar with the little buggers, well - ouch. This could get ugly.

240 DieselDog - yes, the straight 6, Bosch mech. Fuel injection, 4 speed manual,

and I hit the return key....

240 DieselDog, I HAVE to laugh - Dad had 2 240D's, that's what I learned to drive on.

I can tell the difference between a 230D, 300D and 300D turbo by sound (in HS, that car coming down the road meant 'stop doing what you are doing and start doing what you are SUPPOSED to be doing....")

ahh the memories....

Is that gonna be your permanent signature on this board....... you makin "vroom, vrrroooom" engine sounds in car that had to be towed home??

All jabs aside, pull the fuel feed rubber hose line to see if fuel pump is working. Its unlike injectors to cause sudden breakdown on cross country trip.

Chris,
I am going to pick up a 1979 Euro 280 slc tomorrow evening. Although I haven't seen it yet from the price I imagine it is a parts car, so, if there is anything you need let me know. I also have a 350 slc Euro with a 4 spd. manual trans. that is a parts car.

Chris -

The DieselDog has a point. Please change your signature - on copy of the pictures is enough!

Thanks.

Welcome

Sounds like you have a great car. I recently inherited a 1979 280 SL in pretty rough shape so if you find that mechanic or a good body person let me know. I live on the south west side of Chicagoland.
