I was also wondering if I can put an different type alternator with internal regulator and modfy the backets so I can use that instead of stock one?

Thanks

external regulated alternator

I have an external regulated 60 amp alternator, bracket and regulator from a 230 that I'll let go for $50 ,you pay shipping. I naively paid 3 times that amount from a recycler but later decided to install a American domestic internal regulated alternator. Picture attached.

You can get a Bosch alternator with integral regulator that should bolt right on. I did that on my W114 '72 250. Just leave the external regulator harness unplugged - there's no place to connect it to on the integral type alternator anyway.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Have you considered that it might be a lot cheaper to have yours rebuilt, as opposed to buying a new one? There are a number of chain stores/service establishments that do nothing but starters and alternators, and they can do any kind ever made. The ones I'm familiar with are StartMart and Batteries, etc. You may not have these specific ones in your area, but chances are there is something quite similar near you.

I had the alternator of my 73 280C rebuilt for $110.00 two years ago and it's been perfect. I also had them do one for my prior car, a Peugeot 505 Turbo (which must be a lot harder to find parts for) for the same price (a new unit was over $350.00 at my local Peugeot non-dealer shop and that didn't include the installation!).

Do consider it...

Bosch alternator

Diesel,
The numbers on my Bosch alternator that was supposedly removed from a MBZ 230 are: 0 120 400 719 and K1 14V55A. 22 and 21 903 023 A. If this model fits your needs, email me and we can arrange delivery. I will include the bracket and the solid state regulator (#0192 062 005 and 14V 3 B) pictured. Gregg

You know, I had no idea you can get a rebuilt Bosch for that cheap. This was the first repair I had to do after buying the car, so I hadn't done any research and was just comparing the price to my Peugeot part (figuring the MB part would be as high or higher). Of course, over the past two years I've discovered (much to my delight) that MB parts are WAY less expensive than Peugeot parts. Although (not to cause a firestorm on this forum!) I must say my Peugeot was a much better car than my MB. It was just that the parts got so expensive I couldn't justify fixing it anymore.

Regards,
Catrinus

Diesel,
I actually have had 4 Peugeots... it took them a while to get it right (about 1986) but they were dead in the market already so it didn't help. What really helped them was introducing a 4-speed auto instead of the old 3 speed. The 3 speed was too low, especially in the 505 Wagons (which incidentally were built on the Peugeot light TRUCK platform, not the sedan platform). I had a wagon and got rid of it right away. The last Peug I had until the tranny went out a year ago was an 87 505 (gas) Turbo. It was unbelievably fast for a very heavy car. I liked to call it my "sleeper" 'cause it definitely surprised more than a few rice rockets in the area. Alas, it's being used as a parts car by my former mechanic.

The other thing I love about the VINTAGE MBs is I can actually work on them. The Peug was just too complicated (probably any newer car would be, though, right?

Cheers,
Catrinus
