Just changed the Vacuum Modultator......
I have a '79 450SL that had a bad modulator on the trans (bad seal; i.e vacuum leak). When I removed the modulator, there was a metal rod and spring attatched to it. Is there anything else that is supposed to come out with the modulator? I really feel that I missed something here when reassembling. I have yet to drive the car as it is on jack stands getting new subframe mounts, tie rods, steering gear box and coupler. I dont want to drive it until I have verification that my work is correct.
Has anyone else changed these, or have any experience on these trannys????? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!! Rich '79 450 SL Silver/red int. 185K |

If you re-used the old parts on the new modulator, then you did it right. The rod sometimes sticks in the support hole inside the old modulator due to dried out ATF and might have taken some pulling to get it loose, but if you re-installed the new one just as the old one came out, you're ok. In theory, the key should have been factory set, so no adjusting should be needed.

The only other question would be if there was a sealing ring or not on the old unit. Leaving one out or adding one that wasn't there will change the depth of the pin.

Just wanted to update everyone that replied. My trans problem is no more. Did a little bit of trial and error with adjusting the modulator and now have a smooth shifting tranny.
What a difference it makes!!!! Now I know how it feels to drive a true MB. Thanks guuys, -Rich |
