Starter troubles...

Lately, I've been having to whack my starter (sometimes) with a hammer to get it to work. When it doesn't work, it doesnt even power on, which would make me think it's the solenoid, but when it does work it makes a bad clanking sound sometimes. How hard is it to replace the starter (is it something I could easily do in under an hour)? Also, would a starter for another vehicle fit or do I have to get the Bosch SR59X? (There's a SR595X for Fords on ebay rather cheap w/o a picture, why I'm asking). Thanks.

Tomguy,

I'm assuming you are going to drive that car for another 5 years. The 108 chassis was one of the best produced by MB. You could go out and buy a 2003 Dodge Neon for about $12000 with a warrantee. Over 5 years that car will cost you $32,000. I'm saying you are driving for almost free now so quit being so cheap and at least spring for the cost of a rebuilt SR59X. You are still way ahead and driving a much better car.

Peter

Well I think I lucked out, found a rebuilt Bosch on a 420SEL at the junkyard. Looks very good! Didn't test it yet but it looks clean with minimal rust and barely any grease (and the rebuild sticker is still on it, intact, w/MB PN). Besides, I got it, new(er) spark plug boots and wires, and a rear taillight for my Jeep for ~$25 altogether... not too bad!

just a quick question: Is it bad to put grease on the gear and (pinion?)? Otherwise I'm going to put ample amounts of grease on before installing it to prevent wear.

Iwouldn't suggest it. It is not a common practice.

NO GREASE!!!!!

It will collect dust and pretty soon the solenoid will stick or the overrunning clutch won't work, and you will have problems again.

Adequate lubrication is provided by oil vapors back there. Lots of oil on the starter gears means a bad rear main seal, needs to be replaced.
