M116.980 engine in a W108?
Hey all. I was down at the local car wrecking yard today with a mate, when we spoted a W116 for wrecking. When we opened the bonnet, we were greated with a M116.980 V8 engine.
Now, this car wreckers is quite simple, any engine with 4cyl is $100AUD, any engine with 6cyl is $150AUD, and any engine with 8cyl, is $200AUD. So as you can see this is quite cheap Anyway, if I were to buy this engine, what parts would I need from the W116 tyo make it workable? Cheers |

Well, remember that most of us here have 4.5's with M117.984's, not M116's (4.5 in US, 3.5 everywhere else) so I'll answer this question with questions
Is it mechanical or electrical fuel injection? Is it (mech or elec) the same as your current car? If so you might not need the fuel pump. I'd imagine, other than the engine, you'd need the EFI control unit for D-Jet, fuel pump, all the "stuff" with the fuel lines from the firewall foreward (MAP sensor, pressure dampener, pressure regulator, fuel rails, injectors, etc). The ECU for the ignition, possibly the coil... basically, anything hooked up to the engine either directly or indirectly

Well, it's a 1975 350SE. When did they start rolling out the EFI versions?

oh, and the accual engine is a M116.983. Also, where would the ECU be located. Anyone got any diagrams of a W116 to help me out?

Just found it now. It has the D-Jetronic setup, so I assume MFI?

If you're planning on dropping that 3.5 into a 6 cylinder W108, in addition to the compatible fuel injection parts, brain wiring, pump etc, you'll probably need the matching 3.5 transmission. Also, from a 3.5 equipped W108, the 3.5 exhaust system, motor mounts and cooling system plumbing, as I don't think those parts from a W116 will bolt into a W108! Might be easier just to get a 280SE 3.5 with the V8 already factory installed.
Happy Motoring, Mark

New front springs, too, I believe the V8 is a bit heavier than the six.
I think, not sure, that the ECU is under the driver's seat on the W116. If not, it's in the passenger side kick panel. You will, of couse, also need the wiring harness for the EFI! Peter

Well, you are pretty much stating the obvious. All I asked was what parts would need from the W116
Who knows, I might find a 280SE without an engine one day or somthing. Not like i'm going to attempt this project today. |

Take It All
Why not just take the complete car home and you will be prepared for the future...

Good point by Jim - is it restorable/repairable? It'd be so much better to have another Benz in your garage
