1974 240D windshield and rear window gasket/seal
I did a search and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I would to converse with someone who has changed their windshield and/or rear light gaskets. I plan to do this and would like to know what I am in for before I start. Please PM me if you have experience with this.
Thanks, Dan |

Two days ago I had the windshield seal replaced on my '69 230/8, 114 body style, same body as yours. I was strongly advised by several not to attempt such a job myself, even with assistance (it's a 2 man job to do correctly). For $80 a local vehicle glass shop installed it, with a guarantee. Think it was well worth it. Good luck.

Most glass shops will not guarantee the job of replacing just the window seal because old glass is brittle, and cracks easily. If they sell you a new window then a guarantee applies.
Another point is that there are differences in the quality of the seal itself. Buy an OEM seal if possible, and be sure its fresh rubber, that is more easliy installed than one that is old and might not have been stored properly. That said, I have had seals replaced using aftermarket rubber that turned out OK, but the installer said for every 10 jobs like that one cracks. The rear glass with defroster wires is more expensive too, FWIW. Dieseldiehard |
