450 SEL (W116) steering box tighten-up
Friends:
you guys are the best. I have gotten more self-help out of this forum than I could put a price tag on. Truly!!!! Here's my request: I don't really have a major steering problem, but my steering has about 2-2.5 inches of play, and I'd like to reduce it a bit without spending money. Or at least give it the 'ole college try. I'm a decent mild DIY'er. Can anyone, with W116 experience, spoond-feed me and guide me through just attempting the easiest approach to this - without dismantlying things? Has not been getting any worse (I've put on 8K miles since getting the car). Just want to see how it feels with things a bit tighter. Also: What is that 2-piece joiner or coupler about half-way down the steering column shaft? I put my hand in there, and by feel, I seem to think that a screw or bolt connecting the 2 is missing. What size and type of bolt can I fit in there? Thanks for your help - once again!! Bob |

how its done on '79 240D:
6mm allen inside the 19mm locknut tightens the steering by being turned Counter Clockwise. Think in terms of 1/8 or 1/4 turn intervals between test drives.... 1/2 turn is alot; full turn is probably too much. Gotta mark edge of 6mm allen's original position to nearby steering gear casing with dab of paint..... just in case you screw up - it can be restored to original position. This also tells you when you turn it 1/8, 1/4 or 1/2 turn. Steering box problems mostly occur on the "ball joint benz" 123's - Your 116 has the superior gear box, possibly 1/4 turn or less is all it needs. Tightening the steering too much will INCREASE wear on gears. Most important thing is marking original position with paint to navigate adjustment process. Am kinda wondering if 1 1/2 - 2" of play equals normal specs. Something else that might help is flushing power steering fluid and replacing the secret filter that nobody knows about in bottom of PS reservoir. Use real MB PS fluid - not ATF. |
