Custom paint job vs. O.E.M
Hello everybody and thanks for being a member!
Well here is my angst.. I want to paint the car custom, which would the stock color with a little silver pearl in the intermediate coat of clear. Think Lexus but more tan-gray but not as brassy. But here's my problem, I am old school as they say and on a "right" resto the paint should remain exact. Recently I saw a car red candy apple Benz 280s custom go for unreal money 10k.. ironically I saw this several times here in L.A. the guy driving this car. So guys cast your votes? custom or stock paint? |

Nancy, I'm facing the same problem. My 109 has a lot of cracking, small lines everywhere. I like the color (gold), but here are some golds used by Lexus that look really really cool. I ask myself, do I want a show car? Damn near have one now, perfect interior in all and every way!! Stright body, smallest amount of rust. I think what I am going to do is just plane old please myself!!!!!!! I keep thinking about that 560 under the hood.

I tend towards stock, unless the original color is really hideous. I personally prefer many of the non-metallic colors that Mercedes used to use. Other questions I would have about repainting a car today concerns certain paints being unavailible now due to EPA regulations and the frequent failure of clear-coating I've seen on factory finishes and heard about on repaint jobs.
Happy Motoring, Mark

tobst: what you are saying is what we call checking. bummer.. means sanding or srtipping to obtain correct adhesion.
A sealer put over it sanded may buy some years.truley depends on what you expect.but for a driver this is fine. Last edited by NancyR; 10-29-2003 at 09:18 PM. |
