The oil bath works fine, it's just messy. You can replace it, I think, with a later model paper filter type of the same shape.
A K&N will be as much hassle as the oilbath, but less messy. Peter

If I were you, I would stay with the stock air filter. More air means more dirt, regardless of what K & N says. But if you want more opinions, do a search on "K & N" or related query in the Tech Help Forum here and you'll be reading opinions all night. Good luck.

Actually, oil bath air filter do an excellent job of removing dirt, they are just VERY messy, and will cause dirty oil to blow up the intake if not maintained properly. They also take up quite a bit of room.
I think the later W108/109 sixes used a paper filter element in a canister about the same size and with the same mounting as the oilbath if you can find one. Peter

My 71 280SE with 6 cylinder engine uses a paper type filter. It is a rather large cannister located on the RH forward side of the engine bay.

Personally, I hate the oil bath air filters. I tried to clean up mine according to the instructions. I also live on a dirt road, and attribute that thing to the damage done to the engine on my 190Db.
If you can find one, I'd go with paper in a heartbeat. It'll be the one non factory mod that I'll have on my ponton when the car is finished. |
