Having been in the market to buy a 280 for the last 6-8 months I can pass on what I have looked at although I focused more on the 4.5 vs. a 6. Most notably was a 71 with a 6 early on for 3400.00 asking with prefect paint, interior, carpet, etc but needed some stuff like regulators, AC work, cooling help, etc. Later sold for 2800. There is a perfect low mileage sel 4.5 in S.D asking 6500 probably go for ~5500.
So far real nice ones seem to sell for 2500 to 3500 with ~150,000 miles.

I've been surfing for this kind of stuff too. I think the $3k number is pretty solid. Plus or minus depending on condition, the buyer, and eagerness to sell.
It is hard to search this stuff out because there were 2.8L 4.5L and 6.3L 6cyl and 8cyl models. Then there's coupe (2 door), convertible, sedan (4 door), fin tail, european mumbo jumbo vs. US mumbo jumbo. Very hard to pinpoint numbers. I have a good feeling my car is a $3k car. It is a solid car with a combination of items in perfect condition and others in "needs help" condition. The AC needs a new hose and freon, the 3rd to 4th gear switch is "flairing". I have a 1972 280SE 6 cyl automatic. Some of my searches make me think it is worth less, but I think $3k would be easy to dig up. It is just too nice of a car. The seem worth less than what I thought.

Greezr, you've gotta be skeptical of optimistic appraisals as these are special interest cars that most people wont touch...... except for folks like us on this board who have owned and driven vintage MBs our entire lives.
By way of highest and best case scenario, here's an incredibly fine original 45k miles 1973 450SE - first year of the 116 - that topped out at $5,500 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2440222038&category=6331&rd=1 At the other end of the spectrum - you've got scavengers and end-consumers like me, the DieselDog, who has never paid more than $1500 for any car - yet has generally driven each car I've owned for up to 100k miles or more. Am presently driving $500 240D - yet lookin for $900 190Dc. It might sound pitiful - but the economy model 1960's diesel is good enough car for me.

NADA.com has a classic car evaluation. It gives a range between $2,675 and $5,925 depending on condition with the "average" being $4,225.
