door knob.
Hello list,
My outer door handel is not tightly at the door. You can jiggle it around. How do I tighten this on up? cK 1972 280SE 4.5L |

i think you can take off the inside panel and there should be nuts holding the handle on.

Outside door handle is held on by a screw at the front in a "slip on" slot and retained by a screw through the rear face of the inner door panel at the back. Check the screw in the back (it's down in a hole in the panel) with the door open.
Sadly, these are often stripped from being overtightened, so if you cannot tighen it up, you will need to remove the door handle and helicoil or TimeSert the handle. The front screw should be loose enough to slide the whole handle back and forth to "hook" it into the door. My driver's side was loose enough you could remove it completely when I got the car -- rear screw stripped. Very slick system, beats the hell out of taking the inner trim panel off for R&R of the outside handle. Peter

So you can remove the door handle without removing the trim panel, of course!
Besides, it works fine when the screws are set correctly. Peter

If there's one pit-stop competition event that could be clocked with stopwatch at rallies and gatherings of MB owners - its gotta be removal of inner door panel.
108 owners, 114 owners and 111 owners could line up next to their steeds with screwdrivers in hand and tear into the project/competition on sound of starting pistol...... am willing to bet that winning times in the manual window class of each division would be well under 10 minutes. Why take a chance on overstressing the rear attachment screw by leaving the front attachment screw loose enough to just slide into position? |
