1978 280E, Calif car, general questions- available

In the neighborhood there is this car for sale.
White with tobacco interior. W123.
Has about 143K miles.
Automatic trans. A/C does not work.
Has Sunroof.
Body is very good and no visible rust. Interior looks good.

I have not test driven the car yet.--Soon.
The second owner is selling it because she can't afford the repairs so far. She has gone from the dealer to independent mechanics.
She bought it from her boss not long ago. 1yr?

I've gathered a bit of information on the M110 engine and the Kjet
carbs from the archives.

Although I do not plan on buying this car, I am curious to test drive this gas engine car.
She also wanted my help or opinion on a fair selling price.
She hopes to get $3400 for it as-is.
I know this is too much but what is your opinion on a price and also the longevity of the engine and trans?? Or other aspects which may soon give up the ghost.
The original owner supposedly serviced it ony at the dealer, but she has no service receipts

I imagine that the dealer would have a record if this was true.

Thanks for contributing your opinions and insights.

Denis

Nothing special to note.

It should drive a lot like your 300D, but with a bit less noise and more pep. The trans should start in second unless you pull it down to L. They tend to use oil past the valves at this age, and the ACC is a mess with the servo - amplifier arrangement.

I would think anything over $1500 would be doing well as far as price goes.

Especially since you hint at it needing work - what type of work? If it's anything more than a tune-up and oil change, expect drastic price decreases.

M110 is pretty reliable I believe. It just needs TLC - like most other engines - to last a long time and run well.

Carbs

The 280E has K Jetronic Fuel injection, not carbs.
A major plus considering the 78 280's carb. Solex 4A1.
