Re: Front shocks upper mounting nuts
Here I am again. '77 450 SEL; W116.
Question: I've noted that the upper shaft on my front shock towers can be easily twisted by my fingers; very little resistance. Questions: 1. Is this supposed to be this way, or should it be rock solid tight? 2. My two nuts on top seem to be 'locked' against each other. In order to tighten them, I have to first separate them. Any hints? And specifically, which direction are they threaded before I take 2 wrenches to each tower? 3. As to threading of the nuts, how do I tighten down the two nuts? clockwise, countercloskwise? Please be specific. I appreciate all your assistance. Bob |

Patience, Bob, some of us work for a living!
The shock mount should be tight, but what has happened to yours is that the rubber is shot and rock hard. If the shocks are still good, get replacement rubber buffers and install them. Must remove shock to do so, there is one between the top of the shaft and the bottom of the bracket, too. When installing, run the bottom nut down only as far as needed to have a thread or two show out of the top nut, then lock them together. If you run the bottom nut down till it is "tight" you have compressed all the cushion out of the rubber and it will ride VERY hard -- sorta like it probably does now! Peter
