Question 280 sel 4.5 spare parts.

My local salvage yard has an alost intact '73 280 sel 4.5 that I have grabbed a few parts from. Question.......what do you think I should latch onto for "just in case". My first thougt is some of the high value items like the MAP sensor and "brain box" for the FI system but I have no way of verifying they are OK.

It even has "or at least did) the wheels and hub caps.

Does this thing have a fan blade on it?

I desperately need a used 12-blade metal fan for my identical car-

Ps- I am in VA though...

Check the cams (both sides) and grab them if they're good, you and I might be able to work out a price!

A member here named Tim's_Benz would want a window regulator. He is getting his '72 4.5 tomorrow.
Thanks
David

WOW, I should be in the parts business..... . I will check on the fan when I go back this weekend. Do you need just the fan or the clutch also?

Window regulators I am going to grab as both my front ones need some attention.

Cams, how on earth do you tell if they are good or not? I think the guy said he is planing on selling the engine intact.

I think I am going to grab the hydo-compensator if I can figure out how to tell if it's OK. Mine has the coil spring thing.

Litton:

Hydrocompensator is working if the rear end sits level. May or may not be working if it droops, as it can leak down but pump back up when driven (it uses the up and down motion of the wheels to pump the cylinder up).

I'll trade you a decent grill for the wood trim off the passenger front door (with the screws) and the dash bow if it's in good shape. I can send you a grille shell, too if you need it. I finally found my good one, but my spare grille needs the attachement at the bottom replaced, the rivets corroded.

Litton: Easiest way to tell is if all lobes look identical (no uneven wear) and look more like a rounded "V" than a "U" (or even a "V " - abnormal wear on the leading edge). Refer to this post to compare a good lobe to COMPLETELY shot ones:
Clean those camshaft oilers... PLEASE!

Grab the fuel pump and any temperature sender you can find. The factory fuel pumps are expensive and the water and air temp senders are great to have around for quick and dirty diagnosis by elimination.

Speaking of fuel...

GRAB THE INJECTORS! At $100+ a pop, you'd be happy you did - or the purchaser of your eBay auction would be!

In all seriousness, you should grab anything on it that isn't welded down. Headlights and their rims and mounts, taillights and their bulb holders/reflectors, badges, knobs, buttons, levers, trim pieces, alternator, ps pump... I could write all day, but I hope you get the idea!

Good Idea
"GRAB THE INJECTORS! At $100+ a pop, you'd be happy you did - or the purchaser of your eBay auction would be!"

Every once in a while I see a filthy engine with new injetors and hoses at the three U Pull it yards I hit.

fan blade

Litton-

I need the fan blade only (mine broke a blade).

Should be 12-short blades, metal.

Are there any 108's with tobacco/dark brown interiors....?

Gee, maybe you should give up your day job and just start selloing parts...!

Thanks,

JAS
