4.5 runs rough after getting off interstate

What would cause that? The car is a 1972 280SEL 4.5. My friend's dad is in it now on his way to Ft. Wayne since he just bought it. He said it runs great on the interstate, but after getting off, it idles rough, etc. Hasn't stalled.
Thanks
David

Several possiblities:

Vac leak hot (probably manifold halves)

Set too lean, or vac leak, causing the plugs to overheat (they will be white, not tan if you pull them before idling much)

Dirty fuel filter -- this is very likely if not changed recently

Dirty points

Oil on the trigger points.

Mine runs poorly cold, flies hot, never had a problem with poor running after a freeway run.

I'll be if Fr. Wayne IN tomorrow through Sat morning -- PM me if you want to get together.

Peter
