Question 1970 280se

HI....I'm new to this forum. Have always like the older Benzes. Took one (1970 280se) for a drive today and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to look for before buying the car.....Owner wants CDN$3600 for it. The owner said that the car came form Germany and he still had the owners manual, service manual and first aid kit. He is not the 1st owner. Odometer wasn't working. Seemed to be some rust in certain spots but nothing to drastic....Not very familiar with car terms but I did look under the floor mats and in the trunk to see if there was any rust. The floor pans looked fine. The trunk had some condensation on top. Car did not have a musty smell at all...if that helps any. The wood on the dash wasn't in very good shape. I don't know what else to say.....Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

These are pretty basic cars. It should start , run, and drive like any other car. Everything should work - especially heat and AC. Nothing should smoke, pound, rattle, shake, leak, or whine. Brakes should make you feel confident.

Exterior and interior condition are pretty much self-evident. Wood should look nice, no cracks in dash.

Beware of rotted rugs or missing rugs - they are a tip-off to leaks, which lead to rust. Beware of broken door pockets. Beware of broken heater levers.

The rear end should not sag.

You need to remember that these cars are very expensive to fix and not worth much except to guys like us. So you need to buy them right. This sounds like a U$1500 car to me.

Thanks for the advice Chuck! I forgot to mention that this car was shipped to Winnipeg, Canda, from Germany so it probably has been driven in snow and the current owner said that the previous owner had put fiberglass on the sills or something. Am I right to guess that chances are there would be some rust under that? Also on the front passenger and left rear passenger door sills, I don't know what it's called but, the plastic covering on the sill seems like it's bubbling.
So I guess, basically what you are telling me is if I really want a car like that is to find one in excellent condition so that I save myself the hassle. What would I expect to pay for a car like that?
Thanks for ansewring my queries.

These cars are terrible rusters, so if you are going to keep one for a long time, you should try to find a reasonably rust-free example (CA, AZ, BC, etc.) If the rockers had to be fiberglassed that is a sure sign that (a) rust was pretty bad, and (b) there is more waiting to emerge. It sounds like the rust is coming back from under the sill coverings. Forget what I said about $1500 - it's a parts car.

You can look on traderonline.com and ebay for cars. But $3000 US is about all the money for a good 280SE. You can see the economics of it.
