The usual 4.5 suspects on here feel the same way, I know, but I just had to post this morning-

After using the 300TD most of the week (for reasons of fuel mileage and bad weather), a car I love and admire, etc, etc, I had the BEST drive into work today in the 280SEL 4.5- a gas piggie to be sure, but there is nothing that compares to that car humming along at 80+ mph passing everything in sight on my two-lane country highway into town.

With new wheels and tires, freshly-serviced, I simply cannot help myself! A 108 (or 109) being used like a modern, that-can't be-a-30-year-old-car is to me a very beautiful thing.

So, looking for you all to share your 4.5 driving experiences-

Cheers,

JAS

Hey jas2wa, I can dig it. Your pic sums up one of my rosiest views of the world!! My 1972 280SE 4.5 is awaiting some driveline parts but, hopefully, within a few days I'll be back on the road in crappy-weather Ohio. I just bought it 12/7/03 and have not really had much quality time driving, mostly tinkering with the TLC odds and ends. I believe the odo is accurate and it just turned 44K!!

I just got back from a visit to "the city" Columbus, OH (I live in the rural netherland 35 mis. away) and spotted a fellow westbound on I-70 about 10mis. east of Columbus. Anybody on this forum driving that sweet looking blue beast, perhaps an SEL????

BTW, speaking of blue -- does anyone know the name/# of a pale, sorta robin egg blue that MB may have used. Mine has a repaint but it appears to be true to the original color (from comparing the spots they did not want to spray properly.) I have about five tiny chips I want to cover up before they expand exponentially.

As always, THANX

jas2wa 12-18-2003 02:18 PM

Excellent! Is this your first 108 car?

I think that is horizon blue- the really light sky/robin's egg shade?

Check this out, type in the year and M-B:

Check your color code against the codes listed on that site (more accurate than the color samples they show, which are subject to quite a bit of variation from one computer screen to another.)

For example, my car is 606 G, for maple yellow. Looks a bit different from how represented on that site- use it as a guideline if anything.

What you really need is that color code, on the placard when you open the hood, above the radiator slightly to the right.

jas: Do you have a higher quality version of that pic? (Anywhere up to a 1600x1200 jpg would kick arse - especially if that's it's original size ;)). If you have one better than 800x600 (1024x768 or higher) feel free to email a copy to:
fieldingt2@scranton.edu
It'd make one hell of a desktop - very superb quality it seems!

Tomguy-

Think I can handle that request- I'll get back to you tomorrow afternoon- currently pretty frantic...

later,

JAS

I just bought my first car the day before Thanksgiving. It is a 1972 280SEL 4.5L. I just got it back on the road two days ago and took my first road trip last night. WOW! She runs GREAT on the highway. I have to watch my speed though. 90-100 mph comes up pretty fast on accident. I will get some pics of her tomorrow. I am going to take one like the hood shot you have there. My signature shows a little about the car. I have heard a lot of crap from kids my age saying my old car is a junker and such, but they just don't understand.

Tim:

Watch the speed, it's easy to go WAY to fast without noticing. I didn't hear yours run, but they are very quiet in good condition (I have a split manifold on mine, roars like a junker for sure!).

They'll kid you until they get to drive it once. Changes their mind! Nothing drive over the road like a W108 in good shape!

kpb,

I have a blue 1970 280SEL, and I was on my way to Port Columbus Intl. Airport this afternoon (12-18-03 @12:15PM-1:30PM) on I-70 between Cambridge and Columbus. You weren't in that area were you? I noticed some guy in a Japanese car looking me over on the right side, he took some kind of interest in the old Merc.

My car is Mittelblau, by the way, that's like a dark to medium blue.

Hey man, is that taken on RT. 29? Watch out in Madison County, the State and Local cops are out snapping pics with radar.

We're going to have to hook up when the weather gets nicer.

kpb 12-19-2003 08:07 AM

M_Anker -- DUDE!! Yeah, I saw you, why weren't you smilin' man? Beautiful day, your car looked good!!

I was eastbound in a white '65 Mustang, doing 85 at the time. Didn't spot you until we were real close (scanning for the man y'know:no radar detector):( You didn't notice me since I wasn't in my SE. Hopefully, today it will be on the road after I go lay under it for a couple hours to put in the flex disc and tranny mount. I've seen a few of your threads here. Do you know of any central OH vintage MB clubs/resources?

I had my grandmother in the passenger seat complaining about me "speeding." She doesn't yet understand the concept of going "with traffic." I had to pick up my great-aunt at the airport, so this was more of a chore, and it would have been worse if it weren't for driving my car.

I didn't see you. I was running at 80 myself in a nice established cruise, and looking out for the 'staties, just like you were. Just be glad you don't live in a state that uses unmarked cars.

One other thing to look out for is the Avaition Division of the SHP. I have seen those guys down at the Cambridge airport refueling, so I know they do patrol the area anywhere between Cambridge and the Columbus Class-C airspace outer circle. They fly in a red Cessna with OSHP logo's all over it. Really easy to spot:D

No, I live in east central ohio, Cambridge, specifically, and I haven't found any local groups within a 50 mile radius. Now if you're into Corvairs, I know a couple idiots. . .

My father has a 1968 280S in near perfect condition that I got a chance to drive and subsequently fell in love with. I ended up with a 1970 280SEL that needs occasional body work, but it mechanically sound. It's the straight six, rather than the 4.5 V-8 (which I sometimes wish I had). I guess it's a family enthusiast group to me.

Where in OH do you live, eastern portion I suppose?

kpb 12-19-2003 10:56 AM

M_Anker -- Yeah, I've learned to watch out for the OSHP "eye in the sky" fellows. I fly around the area occasionally and have chatted with them at both Newark (VTA) and Lancaster (LHQ). Since you're conversant with terms such as Class C airspace, I presume you fly or will someday? I did check your profile and saw aviation as an interest. I've had my PPL since 9/00 but only rent at this time -- cannot justify the expense of owning, particularly wirh appropriate maintenance, that can be huge $. Maybe someday (when I hit the lottery.)

With that six I've seen some threads that make it sound like getting/keeping those two carbs in synch can be a PITA. Apparently, yours are set-up well?

I live near Baltimore (yes, there is a Baltimore in Ohio!) I'm about 10 mis. south of I-70 on SR 158. We get to call ourselves "Baltimorons" since that is our offical residence. If I get any tips on local clubs/groups of interest I'll pass it along.

Gonna go see if I can put in my new flex disc and tranny mount. If I succeed I'll get this ride on the road today. Take care.

Yeah, I should have my PP by this summer. I was just in Heath a week ago to take my written test, and I already have my 3 cross country solos done. Maybe I could fly up and see your car some day when you get it done?

My car is an SEL, that's a Bosch fuel injection pump rather than carbs. Man is it ever a nice running setup.

I had to look it up on Mapquest. I've never been there. If you hear of any clubs I would appreciate it. Also, are you visiting Potter's or the other dealer in Dublin. I go to Potter's for parts since they are near The Ohio State University.

Took my 300 SEL out yesterday with one of my older sons and let him drive for the first time. We were on 183 (Research) and he was at 65 in a zip. I told him to "floor" the thing, man was he supprised. We were making 85 in seconds passing everyone, a big grin on his face. This guy has always been a truck man but the 300 earned his respect quickly.:p
