1961 190Db hubcaps
Some time ago, I acquired a parts car that is supposed to be a '61 190b (gasser). The wheels on this car have large rectangular devices to hold on the hubcaps. On the '61 190Db that I have had for many years, the hubcaps are held on by what look like short stout pins with large semi-spherical heads. Were both of these methods common on the Ponton style wheels and what is the timing for one style to appear vs the other? The pin style seems to be a lot simpler and cheaper to produce, so I'm guessing it was the second version. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Recollecting from memory goin back more than 20 yrs. when I owned 190b for less than one yr..... it was rectangular spring that held hubcaps in place on typical Pontons. Otherwise am thinkin stub hubcap mounts were introduced in cars at '61..... shared among some Ponton 190's and all '61 - '63 Heckflosse models - finest yrs for 220Sb coachwork, btw.
Interestingly, when MB changed from Ponton body style to the Heckflosse - dealerships had BOTH body styles on their showroom floor at the same time. You havent posted pic of your car and havent said what your intentions are with it...... dailly driver or concours queen? If springs of the rectangular mount wheels break, they are irreplaceable - but having them on your 1961 Ponton 190Db can earn points in concourse/car show competition. Otoh, if you intend to rack up another 100k miles on the car as it was designed for.... the stub hubcap mounts will never fail you.

Unfortunately no digital cam, so no photos likely available in near future. The D is painted faded maroon and has bench front seat and a grey leather interior, while the parts car is a faded pea green with cloth covered buckets and fairly ratty interior. Was mainly interested in the 190 gasser for the rear tempered glass windshield. The one in the D was shot at by a nut with a BB gun and is in a million pieces all still sitting in place. Neither has been run in many years and won't be easy or cheap restorations just to the weekly driver level. Only time will tell.
Thanks for the interesting hubcap info.

I think the changeover was between '60 - '61. My '61 180b has the 3 studs per wheel to hold the hubcaps, while my '60 Finnie 220S has the spring loaded pins in the rectangular housings. A friend used to have a '60 190b and it had the spring loaded pins/housings for the hubcaps
Happy Motoring, Mark
