How fast have you gotten your vintage MB's up to?

This will be VERY interesting, especially when the people with 200D's comment. here, I'll start.

100m.p.h. in Virginia. My mom was sleeping in the passenger seat. She woke up and didn't get mad. She just said to watch it and slow down. Oh well. I'm almost 18, by the way.:p
David

P.S.
Incredibly smooth. I was turning 4150rpm's. That may be even more than it was actually.

Indicated 105, on a back road, going uphill, with some idiot kid in a tubbed out S10 trying to pass me in the 280. Stupid, I'll not be doing it again.

Haven't had the 300D over 90, but it's not a vintage yet anyway. The 220D won't go over 85.

It was fun, though.....

95 just last week while "test" driving the '70 280s after a minor adjustment. An idiot punk assed yuppie in a beemer sees me coming but decides to take my lane anyways at 55. Didn't hit his ass but did put a flat spot on one of my tires since it locked up!

Now there's a "reminder" about sixty feet long every time I go by that section of the road!:(

MikeTangas 01-10-2004 10:56 PM

110 MPH, indicated. Going up a 6-7% grade with a whole lot of throttle left. This was in the 4.5.

Tomguy 01-10-2004 11:34 PM

Indicated 137 (whether ot not it was correct? Meh...) going down a very slight grade (the road may have been flat at that part) on a very straight, long section of the PA turnpike. This was ~3 mo's ago. Handled very smoothly, surprisingly (not the slightest vibration or pull). Had some pedal left but the engine sounded like it was close to (if not at) the redline. Kept it there for about 5 seconds, then dropped down to a more "reasonable and prudent" speed.

Manya 01-10-2004 11:38 PM

90mph, that's with my collapst left engine mount. I haven't beeen bothered going faster, for the simple reason that in australia the highest speed limit is around 70mph. if they caught me doing 90mph, i'd have no license for at least 6 months.

Tim's__Benz 01-11-2004 12:49 AM

I have had my 4.5 up to about 95 with PLENTY of throttle left. I don't have the guts to go much faster here in IN. There are not many places to do this.
Tim

PS: Thanks for stealing my idea about this thread David!

130mph in the 6.9. There are a few streatches of road near where I live where the visibility is good enough to let it rip. Wouldn't want to go any faster on my current tyres since they are H-rated. I'm sure I can see the fuel gauge going down at that speed! Otherwise the 6.9 seems to love the open roads.

110mph indicated last week -- my rationale/excuse, just topped op the power steering res and wanted to check for improvement/difference;) I know, I know...

Car had a bit more throttle but was feeling a lttle light on the front, not wandering, just not as rock solid as at 100mph indicated. Glad I did not have to leave any "reminders" on the road like a previous post:eek:

Manya, that's a sweet looking ride you got! Nice website too, is the truck in the background yours also? Other than the red color I love it too. I used to have a '55 Ford F-100 also.

BTW, what's with them "screens" on each side of your front grill? Never seen them before!

Djenka 01-11-2004 10:26 AM

1980 450SLC (60k km), ~240km/h, still having room for a few km's more but I do not think I'll repeat this soon.
The speed camera flashed
Fortunately, I guess there was a problem with photo since I never got trafic fine. Made me think twice before goind that fast again.

Three weeks ago hit 115 from Georgetown to Austin funning a rice bucket, though my water pump went bad but it was the lower hose. 300 SEL 4.5. Wonderful car!

lol, I wish that was mine. It's accually my pannel beaters truck :)

As for the grills, they are stone protectors used usually when driving through dusty regions (ie, going interstate).

Thanks for the complements :)

I got my 280SEL with a 6 cylinder up to 110 mph on the Interstate, up hill at about a 5% grade. I think it might go faster on a level surface, but that hill was full throttle.

Now the poor old thing is sitting in the garage awaiting a replacement lower control arm and a pair of shocks thanks to some jackass running me off of the cleared road into a slick snowy section with a very high curb. I hope Silver Star Recycling delivers fast! That curb at 4 mph just knocked the wheel camber 10 degrees out of spec by bending the control arm! A new car probably would have folded.

Hello,
1954 170DS: 62mph on any highway! That is the top speed.
1970 280SL: 115mph
1970 220D: 85mph
1979 300D: 100mph

My current cars:
1976 200: 100mph to leave a very persistent Toyota Landcruiser way behind.
1976 450SEL: 134mph, pedal pressed hard against floorboard for at least a minute.

Have a good week
