A month or so ago I was driving home from my brothers (on the 405 freeway), at about 60 mph, when I get the sudden sensation of NO STEERING. It felt like I was driving a car, in one of those old movies where they're consistently turning the wheel but still going straight. SCARY. I was in the second to the right-most lane and a right-hand turn was coming up; meaning, without steering I will end up crossing all lanes and running directly into the center divider. I was able to somewhat negotiate this by turning the wheel over a 3/4 turn. Thinking my steering box was blown, I continued to over steer and navigate off the freeway, into a gas station. I Immediately opened the hood and found nothing visible wrong with the steering. Then I did a walk around and noticed my driver side front tire was completely flat. I pumped it up and got right back on the road.
The part that I find odd is I had no indication of a flat tire; No drag or pulling in any direction and my car wasn't at all tilted off balance. Is this attributed to a perfectly balanced automobile? I think so.
