Can I turn a 250 into a 250D???
Hi there!
Guess what is back in my driveway??? Yes...after 2 long years, I got back the '69 250. When I sent it away, at least the exterior of this car was nice...now THAT'S shot!! Mechanically, nothing has changed. But as my hope for this car was long lost, my optimistic husband has stepped up to the challenge. We now own an engine hoist and are soon planning to pull the engine...his question is whether or not a diesel engine could be put in it's place...(I think I might already know the answer to that question)...I've never SEEN a 250D before...but how about a 240D engine? (Is this a weird question?) Oh...and guess what else...the people holding this car for me LOST THE KEY!! UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Has anyone ever had to get a locksmith to make a key for them? I mean, is it true that an ignition key couldn't be created from a door cyinder, right??? Aren't they different keys?? Am I SCREWED???????? Do I need a new ignition???? ~Christy |

Screwed on losing the key... but how's the paperwork on the car?? If you've got the original stamped owner's manual, title and registration.... then you can take them to the dealer and they will search the key code to cut you a new master key for the car.
Otherwise, the 240D pre-76 diesel engine is the one you want.... later models wont fit without hassle trap adaptations. |

Hello there, Christy
Long time, No hear! 240D engine could work. I recommend a stickshift due to much less power on the diesel (but of course that would be more work). Door, trunk and ignition on 250 should take the same key (unless someone changed a lock) Before desperately ripping out locks, try taking VIN number and proof of ownership to nearest Mercedes dealer. Original keys can be ordered. Or maybe you can find a competent locksmith. Good Luck. Happy Motoring, Mark

- Armed with the PA title, a key is 20$ and a 3 day wait.
- A diesel is a hard thing to do since you have to change over the fuel system and convince the state to register it. Usually, they say no. They'll let you convert a diesel car to gas, but not the other way around. - To put a clutch in the car, you need a transmission, clutch, flywheel, drive shaft, shifter, rods. In short a 250 parts car. As much as you love 4-speeds, it's not an easy job even with the parts, just ask Chuck Taylor. - About 3 years ago (it's been a while), I offered you a complete motor. I sold that one. But I've got another. It will drop right in if you want. The hard part is shlepping it 400 miles. -CTH PS. Glad your back. I've been away from this forum for about a year. I only rejoined last Friday. |

Thanks for the quick responses!
Do you really think the dealership would help me? I had a similar situation happen with my Audi...I lost my key...(yes-AGAIN I had a car with only ONE KEY in existence *sigh*) and went to Audi, with the title, registration, photo ID, etc etc and they said they didn't have access to that sort of information. So I had to call in a locksmith, who dismantled the trunk, working for HOURS to get me a key made. They ended up BREAKING the lock cylinder and refused to take responsibility!! Can you believe it? The good news is, that throughout THAT process, I did meet some competent locksmiths who ended up fixing the trunk... I kinda DO need a key though...all of my books are locked in the MB trunk! At least I THINK my stuff is in that trunk!! LOL!! Who knows??? Now...what about this engine job...should we drop in a "new" used engine, diesel or gasoline, OR is rebuilding the current engine the way to go? What is the most cost effective/time efficient?? Which is better? Hmmm... ~Christy |

This is one case where a benz dealer will indeed help, not hinder.
Rebuilding an M114 engine is pretty simple, but it's not cheap. Dropping in a used motor is trivial. -CTH |

pack up Paul, PJ & Abby, drive out to visit the big apple, and take the motor home.
BTW, my motor in an M130, yours would be an M114. They're interchangable in all respects except the carbs, which I have dozens of. -CTH |

What??? And NOT use the carbs that I painstakingly slaved over for hours on end!!!??? LOL!!!
Whoa....I can't believe that's it's been THREE years!!! That's nuts! This car is still pretty bad off, to say the least! I never did get any welding done on it... Eeeewwww...I forgot to mention, the car is full of BEEHIVES!!!!!!!! scary!! ~Christy |

take care of the wasp nests now, in the cold weather. There are differences between the two sets of carbs. They look pretty much the same, but those little bits of brass in yours are calibrated to feed the 2.5l M114 engine. This one being an M130 is a 2.8l needs different calibrated bits. -CTH

Christy,
Well you sure couldn't use your carbs on a diesel. The 240D was sold in the US with automatic or a 4 speed manual. If you find a 240D/4 speed donor car, you will have all the parts to convert your 250. It still would be a whole lot of work. On the other hand it might make more sense to just buy a 240D in decent condition to use as is. My fantasy would be the 6 cyl M130 with a 5 speed stickshift. Happy Motoring, Mark

You might call the dealer first. A friend lost the key to his 1985 300D and was told that they are NLA through MB. You will probably need a locksmith.

Yeah...
I think the diesel idea is OUT...the thing about PA not allowing a gas-to-diesel switchover makes alot of sense...not to mention that it'd be WAY too much work!!! I agree that we'd be better off just BUYING a diesel and then fixing IT up! btw....check this one out...if ya want....I REALLY like it!!! (never going to GET it though...) Ebay auction # 2464997412 it's so pretty! SO...Chuck, do you really think getting the key from MB will be a problem?? CTH, more input on the key retrieval process, please??!! ~Christy Oh...and...the honeycombs are only what I noticed from the exterior...I haven't even been brave enough to sniff around the interior....woof!! Who knows WHAT could be living in there!!That driver's side window if busted again...not sure if IT was down the whole time or not! |

The key will be available from MB. Will have to be ordered from Germany, so it will take a week or so, but available.
So are lock cylinders -- they are the same as the ones on the 72 I bought a cylinder and key for two years ago. Peter
