Fuel pump leaking?

I was replacing the return fuel line to the fuel tank on my 72 280SEL 4.5 when I noticed that a small amout of fuel is leaking from the body of the pump itself. I guess that doesn't bode well for the life of the pump but should I replace it right away? Any opinions? They're awful expensive so I'm inclined to leave it cause it looks like it's been leaking forever and the leak doesn't leave any gas on the ground. Also does someone know off the top what the internal diameter of the fuel hose from the tank to the pump. It's about 10" long. Thanks.

Not a good thing to have leaking. Are you sure it's not from the fitting at the filter?

There are two style pumps, though they are interchangable. The difference is how the fuel return line is plumbed.

The pumps are easy enough to find used. Anything is better than a leaky pump.

OBTW, you'll want to invest in a pair of hose clamps. They are about 8$ for the pair, often less. Any decent autoparts store has them. -CTH

Thanks, I think I'll start looking for a used one. The leak seems to be at a seam in the body of the pump around where the electric connections attach. It's not the hose connection but I was going to replace the hose anyway.

Has anyone had any experience with a German Star fuel pump?

You mean, "are they good rebuilders"? I would assume so. I've not heard stories of any immolations from faulty rebuilds lately. -CTH

I hope not - I'm about to buy a rebuilt trans valve body for the SL from them.
