76450SL Exhaust maifold w/o cat ?

Hi, I've got a 76 450SL thats been garaged for several years. Althought the car ran great up until 2000 (with the exception of a noisy timing chain on hard acceleration, I'm going thu it from front to rear.

I'm going to replace the exhaust system form the manifolds back. I'd like to replace the exhaust manifolds which include catalytic convertors with manifolds that do not have cats . Anyone ever try that?

I'm sure any pre cat 4.5 liter SL has the exhaust maqnifold I'm looking for, I'm concerned that the pre cat manifold will not line up with the orginal equipment (1976) exhaust.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

1975 and 1976 450 SL's do not have the cat down-pipe of the exhaust manifold.

Instead, the catalytic converters were in the engine compartment. This was a very poor design, as excess heat and restricted airflow in the engine compartment caused vapor lock problems. It also cooked the wiring and hoses in the engine compartment.

In 1977 the catalytic conveters were moved back beneath the floor.

Having said that, if your car is no longer required to be smogged, I see no reason why you couldn't get a new stainless steel exhaust w/o the cat.

I'm sure a company like Timevalve could help you.

Unhappy

I am in your same boat. I have a 75 SLC and the cats get so hot you can barely keep your feet on the floor boards! I can't drive it more than about an hour, after that it is miserable. I have been searching for non-cat manifolds for sometime and haven't found a source yet. There aren't many salvage yards here in South Texas with MBs in them. As soon as I get the manifolds I will run an entirely new system from manifold back. Let me know if you find a source for the manifolds!

76 450Sl exhaust manifolds

Hey Doodah as soon as I have some definative information I'll let you know. You could do like I did and take the manifolds off and brake the cat up internally. Only problem is it not efficent as having the properly designed exhaust manifold, as #4 & # 8 cylinder exhaust has to got back all the way to the front of the manifold to hit the tailpipe.

Sumi, thanks for the link to timevalve, but I really would like to change the manifolds.

I don't see why you can't install the exhaust manifolds from a '72-'74 or '77-80 450 SL, and then do the stainless steel exhaust minus the cat's....

I think any pre 75 or post 76 manifolds would work. Problem is finding them! Most of the ones from the bone yard are not in good shape and leak anyway, I might have to get some that are cracked and have a good welder try and close the seems. I am not sure what other chassis models with the 4.5 will work.
