glowplugs burning up (is fixed now)

what would cause the new glowplugs to burn up? the store didn't have bosh glowplugs all they had were beck/arnely.
put them in the other day and one fried before i ever got the car started, put in a old bosh and drove all sunday. monday morning car wouldn't start again, got in from worik and found another burnt plug. after changing that plug car fired up fine, well this morning i go out to go to work and damn thing won't start again. to dark right now to start pulling plugs yet but i'm sure it fried another glowplug.

are this just crappy glowplugs or would there be some other reason for this to happen.

I am not familiar with the Mercedes glowplugs wiring set up....but having owned a Toyota diesel, I can offer something to digest. The Toyota diesels use a resistor to "tone down" the battery's voltage before reaching the glow plugs. It goes from approx. 12.5 volts to 6.5 - 7 volts. I have seen people bypass a defective resistor and keep on burning up the new ones they put in!
Please keep us posted....I am looking for a diesel for a family car. I am willing to trade a 1973 450SE for one.
Regards,
Tom

Check for a short to ground either on the external wires and resistors or internally (grounded glowplug loop from carbon buildup). If you are missing a resistor somewhere, the glowplugs "upstream" will get too hot and break.

Bosch are better, but something is wrong if one burned up that fast.

When you say "glowplugs burning up" do you mean the actual loop is destroyed? If so, I would check the pre-chamber and see if the pintle is intact. Remove the injector and look for the pintle ball with a flashlight.

makes me wonder where the rest of the metal went.

had one gp that was bent in half like you took a what ever and just bent it. perhaps from heat.

taking it to starcars in edmond okla in the AM for a diag

btw i wouldn't call mine pintles, jk

and what the heck are those?

If I'm reading your post correctly, these plugs are burning up in different holes which leads me to believe that you got inferior plugs, the wrong application, or you are installing them incorrectly.

well finally took SWEETP (and yes it's green as a pea) to the shop and they replaced all the "new" glow plugs that were burning up and not having any problem now.

the set i had were beck/arnley and i picked up a set of champion for $58 since i had already spent about $230 on the car so far.

thanks for all the replys.

The pintle is the "plug" in the injection nozzle that lifts to spray the fuel. MB nozzles have waisted pintles.
