W108 wiper motor inquiry

Hey all, have run some searches but no luck on this precise point.

Recently was poking about under the hood and found that my wiper motor is quite loosely mounted. Had never noticed any oddities in the wiper functions. Took the plate off assuming I could tighten it up to the firewall from under the hood, but, no go. Have also poked about under the dash but cannot locate a screw or bolt to tighten this bugger up!

Is there some magic here like the reviled "knurled knob" of instrument cluster fame? The working space is quite cramped under there. All info appreciated...

kpb

That is a serious PITA to get at. There should be 3 10mm nuts holding it in place. They are under the dash behind all of the HVAC venting and other crap in the way....

Thanx Benzcrusher, I will continue to explore under there. I think perchance the affixing nuts are under some soundproofing/insulation mat material under the cowl area. At least I know I'm in the right area.

Thinking that perhaps this might be why my brake pedal felt like it moved when I had the wipers on, I examined my motor today. Sure enough, it was loose. Lay on your back on the driver's floorpan, you can see the arm mechanism (and the 13mm nut attatching it to the motor) and 3 10mm nuts. I don't know if there's supposed to be 2 "leather" protectors or whatnot under there, mine only has 1 that covers the steering column, so I can see it by just looking up.

1) Remove the 13mm nut and using Channel-Locks, pull the arm mechanism straight off (Minimal twisting if needed).
2) Remove the 3 10mm nuts and their lockwashers.
3) Pull the motor assembly out from under the hood.
4) Using a slotted screwdriver, tighten the 3 screws that attatch the motor to the mounting plate.

Reassembly is simply all the reverse. When reattatching the arm (final step), make sure the wipers are where they should be and that the arm is at the end of the resting position (any further and mine actually went back up a bit). Once you have that, tighten the 13mm nut and check the function (mine were smoother than before, and quieter, for sure!)
