Talking W108 Fuel consumption and AT questions

Hi Everyone,

After many months being on the sideline browsing these forums, inspiried, I've finally found and acquired my first Mercedes Benz.

Tobius(Toby as my girlfriend christened him) is a white 1972 280se 3.5L. Picked him up from Melbourne and drove via the coast to Sydney. Beautiful to drive and has lots of legs - my other half was booked cruising at 80mph in a 100kph zone while I was sleeping. I forgot to mention that the spedo was in mph.

Three questions -

1. What city/country driving fuel consuption should I be expecting?

2. Other theads states that the AT should be starting at 2nd gear. Tobius starts at 1st and then very quickly changes to 2nd and so forth with a light pedal but does hold for longer in 1st when the foot is heavier. Is this normal?

3. The Merc Mechanic in Melbourne advise me that the 1st gear is the weakeast part of the link in the AT unit so advised me not to be too heavy in the foot while in 1st but okay after it shifts to 2nd. Is this true? I wonder if some mods have been made...

The 3.5 is a little rocket. Just love it. Depending on the state of tune and adjustment of the EFI system, it can be 3mpg or 15mpg. I had a car that did 6mpg.

Was this the car that was just on ebay some two weeks back?

Pls note - I'm new to all this so please excuse me for mistakes when posting replies...

Well, I just did a refill last night and I got 44l/151.5Miles, so if my conversions are correct -

44l/151.5miles ~ 44l/243.82km ~ 1l/5.5436km ~ 18.05/100km ~ 13.03MPG(U.S.)

I suppose I need to do this several more times to get an average but I'm really happy with the results.

Hi Cth,

No, I don't think it was posted on ebay but I did stop searching when I came across the ad in a monthy publication. But the previous rego was 'FACES'.

Hi Mike,

Good to hear that there's another one out there that behaves the same way. I have no problems with it, I just needed to know if it was close to norm.

Yes, it does look like a start of a long love affair. . .

Thank you everyone I'm looking forward to our future chats !!

Brds,

Ysmael (ysh)
