Spark plug wires - Pertronix upgrade

I am considering the Pertronix upgrade for my 280S. Now, I have the following questions:

1. What is the best option: Ignitor or Ignitor II?

2. Do I need a new coil from Pertronix or can I keep my current Bosch coil?

3. Do I need new spark plug wires?

4. If the answer is yes, then what type of wires do you suggest? Fastlane has Bosch plug wires. Are these the best option or should I get other wires?

Thanks in advance.

Your choice of Ignitor is dictated by availability. Pertronix doesn't have many Ignitor II's available for 6 and 4 cylinders. I would get the flame thrower ignition coil to go with the Ignitor cause it'll allow you to get a super hot spark. You'll also have to regap your plugs. I think if you go with the Flame Thrower I you can use your stock wires but if you get the Flame Thrower II's you'll need special wires.

I put an Ignitor I in my Atomic 4 in the sailboat. Lots of other A4 users have done the same. I kept the original coil and wires but there are a lot of reports of overheating original coils with the Pertronix ignition in A4's. Those problems are fixed with epoxy coils I believe.

I believe I once read an explanation of this problem. It had to do with the Pertonix allowing for increased electrical current along with other problems (greater dwell angle????) as a result of only having 4 cylinders.

In any case, you will have to measure the resistance of your coil before using it anyway because there are precise resistance parameters for the Pertronix system.
