69 280SE with bad head $500?
This almost seems too good to be true. It's in my city (Portland, OR).
http://www.angelfire.com/un/69mercedes/index.html How much would a head replacement typically cost? I think the problem with buying something that doesn't run is the risk that the problem is really deeper than what the owner says it is... please save me from myself if you think I'm thinking of doing something stupid (in your humble opinions!). The ad says 'cracked cyl head replaced' but also needs '5th cylinder'. I don't get it. Better to find out in person. It may need a piston or rings. From the picture in the ad, the car looks nice, check it out in person.
Check for rust, as usual.

Does the owner have a clue in the world?? If not, it will make engine prognosis much more difficult as God only knows what kind of abuse the engine has endured in between lengthy periods of non-use.

It looks like a very nice car at least from the pictures. But if everything that you can look at, poke, and prod is OK, you are still running the risk of a major piece like the trans, brakes, or rear-end having problems. And the dog is right - the head didn't crack by itself, so suspect overheating and additional engine damage.
You might be able to put a used head on it and find out it's a great car, or you might need a complete engine and then find that the transmission slips. Running, it is probably a $2k or less car, depending on the local market.
