smoke
Hello,
Is there any way to tell if the blow by from the engine is from the piston rings or the valve guide seals. At my local MB dealership they said they could do a leak test, but I don't have a way to get it down there (well I do but I don't really want to) and also they want $150 just to do that test. Thank you spencerbandit88 |

Do you get a puff of blue smoke on startup cold? If so, you are leaking oil past the valve guide seals and/or through worn out valve guides.
However, if you have smoke on heavy throttle, chances are it's the rings. Leakdown test is the correct way to tell, but if you have excessive blowby, it's really time for an overhaul. Peter

If you or someone you know is crafty with plumbing fittings, here is a link on how to build and use a leakdown tester.
