How to replace the hood star? W111

OK, I bought a nice shiny hood star to replace the pitted nicked up one on my car. I managed to get the base and star off the grill, but how the heck do you seperate the star from the base?

Last time I did this, I made a hook tool from a bit of wire. Or you could try vise-grip pliers to release the spring. Grab the bottom of the spring where it's attached under the base and pull/rotate. Probably will need a wire hook to pull the spring back into place. Might be easier if the mount is attached to something, like the grill.

Happy Motoring, Mark
