Question ??car Value??

I was just cruisin around the web lookin for like a mercedes value guide or something like that, then I found this site, with a bunch of mercedes pros. So this is better..

Do any of ya'll know how much a 1968 Mercedes Benz 220 Diesel with a manual transmission, 4 doors , 110,000 approx miles (theres only 5 digits) fair paint, fair interior, uh its a 6 cylinder, with a salvage title is worth?

The guys asking 2000 obo.

That seems like a quite a bit? Are these cars just worth more for some reason, or is he just trying to make some money?

What is a fair price for this vehicle?

Thanks a lot!!

Better go count the cylinders again. 220D was a 4 cylinder.

Mileage could easily be 210 or even 310. Collectors thumb their noses at old diesel sedans, so the value is not really very high, especially with a salvage title. (Wonder what happened to it).

1968 and 69 were bad years for the engine blocks. Bad metal caused the cylinders to oval out. If it's the original engine at 110K, it may be at the end of the line. If it's 210 or 310K, I bet the engine has been short blocked or replaced.

There might besome interest in this car for biodiesel experiments, but not much value otherwise. If I had to put a price on it sight unseen, I would say about a kilobuck. That doesn't mean that it wouldn't be a nice daily driver / low level restration project, it's just that the market for old diesel sedans is limited to a small group of diesel enthusiasts (read as cheapskates), who generally prefer the 123 models. The general public wouldn't touch this car with a 10 foot pole.

Edit... Where are Y'all located??

Just my opinion, but if that really is a wealthy old dead guy's car which was previously donated/auctioned/sold to settle his estate AND it's got service records to back up the mileage AND it's got the 4-spd tranny plus tobacco brown original paint with bamboo interior - then the seller might even get the asking price - or something damned close to it, say in the neighborhood of $1750.

Why no title?? Better check with your dept of motor vehicles about buying an untitled car from out of state and importing it to your home state first.

The 115 will outhandle and run rings around the 123 which is 500 lbs heavier and merely offers a more soundproof body shell in its favor. For all intents and purposes, the 220D from 1968 is a much better Benz than the 240D of 1978.

Thumbs up So the '68 Diesel blocks are no good?

From Louisiana, but livin in washington... I own a chevy truck but gas is to damn expensive.. Work is over 40 miles away. the mountain is 60 ( for skiing in the winter ) thinkin a little diesel car would pay for itself in no time. So now im lookin to buy one, but dont want to just jump in and then find out I got ripped off, cause thats no fun. Really apreciate the info.. cause I also dont want to get a good deal on a nice little car with a worthless engine.

Are you in Washington State or Washington DC?
Someone locally that I know was trying to sell his '74 240D. He's the original owner, retired military and bought the car new in Germany. Car's in decent shape but not perfect. (But probably much better than a 'salvage' 220D) He was asking $1500. I think the car is still availible. Do a search on the 'Cars for Sale' site on this Forum.

Nels' 1974 240D is located near me in Alexandria, Virginia.
Car's a 4 cylinder, automatic, with 160,000 miles. (All postwar Mercedes passenger car diesels are 4 cylinder, until the 5 cylinder 300D was introduced in the mid - '70s)
I posted '240D Needs a Good Home' on the Cars For Sale Forum on 03-22-2004. I checked and all the information is still there. Nels still has the car but I don't know if he's decided to keep it or if the price has changed.
His Email is - Nelsusma@aol.com
