108 american style twin headlamp horror!

tradegy!

I left work today, walked to my car and found someone had side-swiped the front right quarter panel, in the process tearing out the RHS twin headlight, tearing everything (including the shroud) out and onto the road.

The quarter panel just needs to be beaten and resprayed, no big deal, but i've heard the american style headlights go for a pretty penny, could anyone give me a rough idea how much? Also one of the headlights isn't even smashed, its just the lower headlight and the indicator, there's no possibility to buy these parts seperately is there?

hah all this just after i fixed my idle problems yesterday, what else could go wrong

That sucks. Where are you from? There is always eBay if you have access. And it depends on what a pretty penny is to you, you can buy new for around $300.

Here in the US, it's the Euro 'bubble' headlamps that go for a pretty penny. I bought a US-type stacked round headlamp unit off a W108, complete with the chrome surround and side lenses, off Ebay for $60 and thought that was too much!

holy jesus really?

Im in australia, i had a look around yesterday and the cheapest price i could find was $700 (~$490US), no i haven't the faintest idea on how to work ebay, but if i could score one for $60US i best learn...

Actually the twin style headlights are in such demand here the pair i have on the car at the moment is the third pair for the car, the other 2 being stolen when parked?

Even my Euro headlamps weren't nearly that expensive.
The pair I installed on my Fintail was under $200 US. (though I've seen them asking much more!)
I would consider selling my US headlamp units but I must hang on to them in case something bad happens to my Euros. The trick on Ebay is not to jump on the first set you see. If you take your time you can find the bargains. The sealed beam units are so common here. The cost of shipping to Austrailia could be higher than the price of the headlamp.

I've occasionally gotten small Ebay items from overseas, but not yet Austrailia. I bought a small Grundig microphone from Italy for $10. Shipping was $20!
I did check Ebay after my last posting. There was one pair of 108/109 headlights off a 6.3, with the "rarest of options" - built-in electric headlight wipers. According to the seller, this was part of a special batch of Bosch headlights that had been contracted for sale in Sweden. When I checked, the bidding was up to $1100!
I'm sure you can still find them (without the wipers) for about what I paid.

There is also a salvage yard here in the US I have been dealing with to buy parts from. I just recently bought every piece of wood (used but in darn good shape) to replace all of the wood in my 108 250S. Shipping and all, I think I paid somewhere around $190, which I felt was pretty darned good. So if you would like, I can give you their email and you can try them............

Excellent!

Finding parts for my 108 is an absolute bastard, when i can actually find things people are not willing to part with them unless i pay something ridiculous, i remember last year i replaced the rear window seal, apparently i picked up "the last one in australia" for a mear $540 ($380US).

68_Mercedes - i wouldn't mind having their email address actually, if you replaced all that wood for under $200US, that's unheard of for me.

Would anyone have an estimate on the weight of the headlight?

Niels

I have this metric French dial scale that I use mainly as a wall decoration. One complete headlight bezel with side-lenses and bucket assy, but without the sealed beam lamps, weighed in at about 1.5 kg.

You need to discover Ebay. Often their prices are outrageous too, but if you're patient, you can be rewarded. I bought a complete pair of nice used Fintail bumpers, for $171 US, including shipping cross-country. One week earlier, another seller was selling the same bumpers piecemeal (each bumper has 4 pieces) starting at $75. At his price, both bumpers would have cost at least $600, + shipping!

Niels --

This guy's in Oz and might be a source of parts.... He does quite a bit of Benz custom work.

http://www.big-toys.net/

108 Parts aren't too difficult to come by in the US -- I'm sure most of the dealers/ parts houses/ wrecking yards would be happy to ship to Australia. Ebay is a good source as well. Let us know if you need some names & numbers of our sources...

Good Luck and don't buy any more $500 window seals, please!

I did a bit or research, if i had it sent via UPS, shipping would cost me $80US, on the other hand for me to ship through the postal service from australia to the USA on economy airmail the same package would cost $25US.

Anyone aware if the US postal service is also that cheap?

Transit time is of little concern, im in no desperate need for it to arrive at my door within 5 days...

This is my car before it got nicely smashed, worst thing was, whoever smashed into it left a kind note saying:"To the owner, sorry."
