buying a 68 280 SE

I found one(over the phone) supposedly in good appearance and running 3 yrs ago when parked(owner died.) Seller(estate guy) tried to turn motor over but would not turn over-"stuck." Does this mean the engine is frozen=parts car only? Are there times when the engine may be freed? If so I may go look at it. If automatically seized then the car has no value to me-price of engine work>value of car. Good examples of this yr/model= $2500?
Thanks for any advice.

You would need to inspect the engine to figure out whats up with it. BUT here is my quick 2 pennies.

Put a 560 engine in there. Drops right in and you can find an engine and tranny for under 1k. For 1500 the car can be running with a 5.6 in it. The engine is the exact same except newer so it will still mount up and be correct, the tranny, would be better off with a newer 4 speed that was designed for the 5.6.

If I had the chance I would do something like that. One of my future projects def includes this car with that engine,

Good luck,
Peter

If the car is a 1968, then it's a 6 cyl.

Make sure the battery is fresh and the cables are tight. It's an old car and the rubber bits may need replacing.

Often you can get bargain cars that dont run, paying peanuts and ending up on top of the game - assuming you know what you are doing and dont mind getting your hands dirty..... like really dirty, I mean being able to pull cylinder heads or do an engine swap (if necessary) without hesitation.

One of the "newest" and finest MB's I've ever owned came with a pre-blown headgasket. It was a perfect condition '65 220Sb with sunroof that I bought for $450 in 1974. The seller was a rich man's son who bragged to his friends how he screwed me on the deal (:lol but I got the last laugh by pulling and repairing the cylinder head myself which amazed the dummy who probably never turned a wrench in his life.

Then I found another one parked outside with a seized engine for free a few years later. To unseize the engine we poured a quart container of liquid wrench into the spark plug holes over several days and let it marinate for a week. Next we dumped alot of Marvel mystery oil into the chambers and let it sit.

Finally we towed the car to the top of a long steep hill, after an oil change and new plugs, fresh battery, clean carbs, etc and jump started it at about 30mph in 3rd gear. I thought the jolt would knock the tranny right out of the chassis, but the engine unseized and started right up with a roar and cloud of smoke. The only thing we didnt anticipate was the brakes not working very well.

The seized engine car ran well throughout my 2nd attempt at college after taking a couple of years off, but it always used oil - about a quart each 600 miles.

Is there a way to look at the car to see if the engine is seized and the possible causes?

Remove Spark Plugs

Remove the spark plugs and pour a little oil(use mobil 1 synthetic) in each hole. Just a couple ounces and then try the battery or you can turn the engine over by using a 27mm socket and a short 1/2 extension(3 inches long) and a half inch braker bar or rachet and a cheater pipe. If you are going to turn it over by hand do not hook up the battery..I would turn it over by hand(BE SURE YOU TURN THE ENGINE OVER IN A CLOCKWISE MANNER-THE SAME AS IF YOU ARE TIGHTENING A NUT-TO THE RIGHT) and then hook up the battery. Lay a rag or shop towel over each hole so oil is not sprayed everywhere. If the battery turns it over easily then replace the plugs and if the battery does not turn it over you have either a weak battery or a bad ground( clean Connections) or starter issues..Jim
