Becker Radio/Amp
I've obtained the correct vintage Becker Europa II stereo radio with attached amp to replace the mono Europa II radio that was originally in my '72 280SE 4.5.
Can anyone tell me where the attached amp was originally located? The cable that attaches the radio to the amp is just under 3 feet long, leading me to believe the amp ended up far up under the right side of the dash, but I'm just guessing. My car has A/C, so the evaporator box takes up a good amount of space up under the right side as well. Any light shed on this situation would be greatly appreciated! Tom Drew

Hey Tom, when I replaced my Europa with a Mexico (which also has the amp) I was led to understand that the amp resided behind the cover on the tranny hump, y'know, the one hiding all the underdash A/C stuff. That is where I put mine. Did'nt even anchor it, just sorta wedged it securely in the spot.

I just pulled out such radio from 4.5 at a junkyard. No faceplate . I was in a hurry, but as mush as I can remember it was just bellow the actual radio. After I removed the radio I was looking through the opening in the dash and working with the screw driver from the bottom. They are very close to each other.

Mine is behind the tranny hump cover -- two screws, one on each side near the front.
Usually mounts in a bracket. May be in other locations on other cars, doesn't matter so long as you get the power wire and speaker wires attached, A question of my own: Are these interchangeable? I've got a Becker Mexico with cassette I'd like to install, but the speaker wire connections are different. Can I use my old one (head unit long gone, cheapo Kenwood installed, cable butchered), or do I need to use the one that came with the Mexico? Peter

Europa and Grand Prix amps are not interchangeable with each other, nor with the Mexico cassette units. You need to use the amp pack that is specific to the particular radio.
The amp packs reside directly above the transmission hump underneath the A/C unit, under the dash. There is a metal bracket that should reside there behind the carpeted cardboard panel (which is held on by a Phillips screw on each side). This metal bracket holds the amp pack, which is also held by a single bolt going into each side of the amp pack. I think it is either a 6mm or an 8mm bolt. The thick gray cord goes from the amp pack up into the dash into the back of the radio. Later Europa II units didn't have separate amp packs, the amplifier being integrated into the headunit itself. If the speaker connections are on the back of the Europa II headunit, then there is no separate amp pack. All Europa models required amp packs. Cheers, Gerry |

as much as i know, the amp was located below the glove box attached on the back side of that piece of carpet.
my 2 cents, Peter |

Much thanks to all who responded. I'm relieved that the amp will be easy to get to mounted on the tranny hump, instead of buried behind the dash somewhere. I'll also post updates on the sound system I'm setting up, if any are interested. It will feature EQ, Balance, and Fader controls, as well as Aux inputs for CD and/or Ipod, but keep the stock Becker cosmetics.
