74 280C Sunroof drains

Can someone tell me where the rear sunroof drains come out?
I have fed a wire down from the top and it goes about 5 feet past the extremity of the car. ;-)
Thanks

Check out **************.com on the links thread. They sell sunroof maintenance kits complete with long wire brushes, special grease and instructions. Weather stripping is also available but it cant be easy to fit. I'd probably buy the weather strip and then find a glass shop to install it.

I think messing with sunroofs can be dicey. Why do you need to locate the drains?

74 280C Sunroof drains

Thanks for the reply.
My main motivation for locating the drains is to make sure they are clear, as I have some water in the trunk and rear floor pans.
The rear window seal, trunk seal and windshield seal have all been replaced by the PO.
I did find the drains appear to come out the vents just behind the side windows, but they appear unaccessable from the bottom.

I have replaced the front sunroof seal, a little effort not too bad. The side brushes are quite straightforward, and I have the rear seal on order. It appears straightforward, but I understand others have not found that to be true, time will tell. ;-)

My real problem is that my first effort to check the drains involved a plastic nozzle and a short hose to blow compressed air down the drain. Unfortunately the nozzle came off and is still stuck in the drain tube.
Not sure how I can get it out. :-(

Water in the trunk could come from the roof rack. My 1976 280C had a couple of rivets that were loose or missing and water found its way in. Since it was a beater, I just put in a blob of silicone and taped the rack down till it cured. My 1971 250C has some bad rivets but doesn't seem to leak.

DOH!

I don't know crap about the sunroof drains... but how large is the opening? Is it impossible to shoot air up through the drain from the bottom side? If not, attach a "blower" to an air compressor hose and see if you can blow the thing out from the bottom side... If it isn't, sounds like you need something sticky attacked to a long wire to slide down in there to try to "catch" the thing so you can pull it out.

74 280C sunroof drains

I had also thought to blow air up the tube.
I can't find or see the bottom end.
I have discovered it is just behind the rear window vents, but I cannot see inside, although I have found the end of my wire on the other side. There is just not enough room.
I may have to remove a piece of the headliner to gain access.

If anyone has a wrecked coupe, could they locate the rear sunroof drain outfall for me??

THanks

Now you are ripping into the headliner..... Why is it so important to recover a plastic air hose nozzle? Sounds like a twenty dollar solution for a two-bit problem to me.

114/115 and especially 123 MB trunk lids ALWAYS leak water, I doubt it has anything to do with sunroof drains at all.

Found 3" of standing water underneath plastic trunk liner on both sides of my 123 trunk behind the wheel wells. The car has no sunroof and I threw the plastic liners into the bushes, to keep an eye on the problem, and just poked out rubber drain nipples underneath that had clogged. This solved the problem fine.

240DieselDog, I don't think I would wish to leave an obstruction in the sunroof drain?

I have also found some rust inside the vent where the rear sunroof drain emptys, Im hoping I can scrape it some and spray in some rust paint.

Not sure what you mean by roof rack, there are a couple of strips from front to back, they appear only decorative to me?
Or, was that an option?

coupe roof rails

I'd always assumed that the roof rails were for an optional rack but I've never seen one. If you look at the rails on the inside edge there are some notches that to me look like where a rack would slip on. Has anyone ever seen such a rack?

Retrieving the plastic bit

If the drain tube is straight or has a gentle curve, you could use something with a threaded end to “screw” into the plastic and pull it out. If it is close to the top a drill bit might do the trick but if it went farther down maybe a piece of 10-32 threaded rod or the like will work. How about connecting your original hose to a vacuum cleaner and trying to suck it out?

Thanks for everyone's input.
I managed to get the offending part removed.
I learned a few things.
To check the drains, my second idea was best.
Which was to snake a plastic covered clothes line down the drain, however I did have to put it inside a 2' piece of 1/2" conduit to get it near the opening.
To see clearly inside the vents, behind the side windows where the drain outfall is located, I had to use a dental mirror and of all things mini Christmas Tree lights.
I had tried a fiber optic flash light attachment without success.
Once I was able to see the bottom end I was able to snake the clothes line up from the bottom and push out the obstruction.

Now I can finally finish off the job of resealing, cleaning and re-lubing the sunroof.

As an aside and for anyone else who has to attempt this job, it is not obvious how to remove the molding around the back of the side windows. THere are 2 small screws on the bottom, and also 2 small HIDDEN screws on the top under the rubber.

Re: roof rails

Michael: I did notice the notch's you referred to on the moulding strips. You are probably correct, I have no idea.

My 87 300TDT has a factory roof rack, but I think that was standard equipment for a wagon.
The cross bars were optional.
