Morons and their Mercedes......

I was driving down the road yesterday and spotted a 300SEL 4.5 sitting in a field. From a distance, and looking at it from behind tall grass, looked to have a fairly clean body.... So I thought to myself... Hey, parts car!

So I pull in this person's driveway, and they are outside. I pull up to where they are standing (about 500 ft from the car), and ask them about it, and if they are wanting to sell it. The guy says yeah, it's for sale, $2,500 dollars. Seeing that the weeds almost reach the top of the car, I ask him, "Is it a runner, or better served as a a parts car?". He says, well, either I guess, It was running when I parked it there. It's in really great condition though." SO I ask him if he minds me taking a look at it (knowing in the back of my mind I'm not about to pay $2,500 for a car that's obviously been sitting in the weeds for 4 to 6 years). SO I walk down and look at the car.... doesn't look so good upclose.

Let's see, where to start here.... well, with the front... both headlight assembleis are missing. The front windshield is smashed, the leather interior is tore all to hell (NONE of it is saveable), all the interior wood is shot, the driver's door won't close all the way (I don't know why), several interior pieces are missing, including the ashtray, radio, center front seat cushion, carpet is ruined, interior door handles are missing as are the window cranks, passenger side rear door is smashed in, and the rear is sitting flat on the ground so I assume the air ride suspension is shot as well.

Now, call me stupid or ignorant if you want to, but exactly what was this moron referring to when he said the car was in "great shape"???? Did he mean it's in great shape for a car that went through a tornado??? And he wants $2,500 for this fine piece of yard art????? It amazes me at times, people think since it says Mercedes that they have a goldmine. Morons and their Mercedes, I swear.........

Engine & Transmission conversions

68 Mercedes,
Noticed the cars in your signature. I think there are a lot of us out there that would love to hear about your two Mercedes cars that have engine and transmission conversions. What kind of alterations were required and are you completely satisfied with the results? Hopefully you'll satisfy our curiosity.

I love it when I offer $250 on a car and they balk that "the grille is worth $400 alone!!"

Many more nice cars in the hands of the uncaring than

under the care of enthusiasts.

When I was in grade school a house painter had a '30 Cadillac limousine as his service car, since he could hang long ladders on the outside and store all manner of paint and equipment in the gutted interior. Another neighborhood fruit peddler had a '51 Packard hearse converted to a "ute" in which he hauled his wares.

Sad thing is when Mercedes models that would survive forever if just given regular and appropriate care perish quickly when neglected.

Greg, I am elated with the final results of the conversions. I honestly feel I have twice the car I had before, although I am sure loyalists would disagree. But anyway... yes, they are awesome rides.... and have alot of HP on the takeoff now. If I had to choose whether or not to do it again, would I? HELL YES! Alot of the conversion info is located in this post: (w108) Non-stock Mercedes wheels and tires, oh and motor too! lol Any info that you would further be interested in knowing I would gladly provide.... just post it in that post. I can also provide pics.... Rest assured though, without an insane amount of money offered, I would never part with these 2 cars..... I will drive them until I'm dead, or they are destroyed.... (both of which I do not look forward to!)

Anyway... as far as the yard art is concerned... I guess there is a sucker borne every day, and someday, that ole' boy will find one to buy his ratted out mercedes....................

Did you counter his offer? People can start with absurd prices just to see if they have a moron, to ask for the sky. Come back with 10% of his asking price.

Naaa.... when I originally spotted the car I thought it was a 280 SEL with the 4.5, but it wasn't. It's the 300 SEL, which is a w109, which is a little different to the w108 which is what I have... however, many of the parts would still work... but I just wasn't too interested when I found out it was a w109.......
