75 280S 116 - Accelerator thingy
[IMG]It's been a while and I am happy to say that I've had only minor problems with my car - testament to its engineering and despite the Solex carby that everyone consoles me for having - it runs beautifully as long as it is avoided.
I am getting close to fiddling with it now - as I was driving the other day I felt a 'sponginess' in the accelerator peddle which then led to zero acceleration. On inspection the culprit seems to be a 'coupler' in the accelerator assembly, located beneath the air filter (see images) - where the arm spanning the DOHC (kickback mechanism) and the arm going to the carby are connected. The rubber mount is badly perished, and the accelerator connection doesn't seem to have a corresponding attachment (it may have fallen off). It's currently held together with some thick gauge wire that I put around it - but not sure how long this will last - and it's very hard to identify the required part to the local wreckers (as there aren't many 280s carby motors in Oz). If anyone can tell me what's missing or give a general description that would be really helpful. Last edited by stiffy; 10-20-2004 at 01:24 AM. |

Hello,
Take a look at this website:macmerc.netium.com.pl There is a scanned W116 parts book in the W116 section. Hope that helps.

What I think has happened is that the rubber has broken off and is no longer holding the pin in place - hence the wire. You need a new rubber piece, which is probably a dealer item.

Thanks - probably not a wrecker item as you say. I'll give it a shot and see whether the dealers are any wiser.

Because the rubber is used to reduce vibration at the pedal and not as a way to protect from overtravel, I drilled clean through both metal plates and the rubber and secured it with a bolt.

The rubber coupler is called a "Silent Block" and this problem is not uncommon, used to be $35 in parts. Gotta love some of the MB parts names: Headlight Doors, Shift Gates, etc.

Silent Block - god... no matter how verbose I became - I would never have arrived at that.
thanks all - my improvised silent block is still hanging in there - and i have a very responsive accelerator - and maybe a faster car. |
