1972 4.5 Cutting out!!

Hello Listeners,
I have a 1972280se 4.5.
The car runs very well …. Or so it seems. . I have driven it to work several times with no problem.
However, it will cut out for no apparent reason. You can be driving along and suddenly you feel no power and it just dies. Sometimes it starts right up. Other times it will not start at all. When this happens I do not get 12 volts at the fuel pump. That is when I changed the relays. But it did not help. Is there anything else I can check for?
I have done extensive work to it over the past year.
I have made many improvements to make it reliable
Here is a list of the work done to the engine ….
Plugs
Wires
Cap
Rotor
Pertronix II system
Main relay
Fuel relay
Upper and Lower Injector seals.
Fuel Injection hoses
Temp sensor
Hoses
Belts
Anti-Freeze
Oil
Filters
Flush out and clean fuel tank.
Blow out fuel lines

Thanks
Anthony

The only thing I don't see on your list was a new fuse. Have you tried replacing that aprticular fuse yet? If not, don't even check/llok at it, just replace it. Possible to have a hairline crack in the element which can cause intermintent outages.

Hi Mike....
What fuse do you mean?
Under the dash?
What number?
I did replace number 4 with a new one.
Did I miss one?

I believe it's number 8.

Replace all the fuses, chances are they are all in bad shape. Most of them are aluminum, and it gets brittle AND corrodes. The strip will flex and fatigue with load changes, then crack, and it will also corrode through at the ends where the clip holds it. It will look fine then, and conduct if you use an ohmmeter to check it, but wont' actually be connected!

Worst case the ECU is bad and is turning the fuel pump off. Check the ground wire for the ECU - I've known them to be bad. Causes a cold start problem, too, as the fuel pump won't run.

Did you check the thinner wire connected to the positive terminal at the battery? This is for the fuel pump relay and if it's dirty/corroded, it may be the cause.

Fuses gnd and power

hi guys
Thank you for the responce
I will replace all the fuses as soon as I can.
The thinner wire going to the FPR seems to be ok I cleaned the terminal ends. I wiggled that wire it when it was not running. No change.
I have a wire digram ............pin 2 and pin 25 are open ....the others all seem to be connected.
Do you know what wire number should be ground?
I will also check the ground from the body to the engine.

I'm gonna have to defer to Peter on which fuse it is, my 4.5 is in California and I am in Michigan right now, without any 4.5 reference material.

Aside from finding a CPU, sounds like a spare wire harness wouldn't hurt. -CTH

Ground wire is brown, standard EU/German color codes.

Check the big nest of grounds behind the battery on the firewall, all the injectors and ECU ground here, so if there is some corrosion (not on THIS car, eh?), you could have either ECU or injectors dropping out.

Bad fuel pump or relay will do this too, so check the wiring at the pump in back!

Peter
