Thanks for all the concerns guys. I was actually going to have my mechanic find me a door with all the accessories (window, motor) and swap it onto my car. He said that he could find me one for $200-300 locally, maybe less if he has a parts car (he can't remember!). And I'll take it to maaco to have it painted since they did the whole car 1.5 years ago. It shouldn't cost me too much if I go that route, and that way I can take the extra money and pay to get my bmw fixed which had a hit and run about a year ago. It's not super bad, but it has a crease on the b-pillar which may require some expensive work to fix and look factory.

Oh btw, I live on a super low-level traffic street on a cul-de-sac with only about 20 houses. I don't think anyone has had their car hit here. I would park her in the driveway behind the bmw, but I would have to move her everytime I took the bmw out, which is what I am driving all the time now.

Guess it doesn't matter where you park your car... my ex managed to plow our Jaguar through the side of my buddy's Probe here on our property, and we live on 5 acres..... you'd think that 5 acres would be enough room that she wouldn't be able to run in to anything... but she did..... and caved the entire side of his Probe in during the process...... I guess some people just can't drive....... lol

So I should have a check coming on Sunday. Hopefully I'll get my baby fixed asap.

I hope you had the presence of mind in the midst of your justifiable anger to file a police report. Insurance companies will try to weasel out of anything and if there is no police report, then as far as they are concerned, the accident didn't happen.

Too bad about your 250SE, looked real nice. I bet that door could be salvaged by a good shop if you cannot locate a sound replacement.

Good luck,

They didn't wanna go through insurance so I didn't file a report either. They are super nice people and they promised me they'd have my check on Sunday. My mom has been dealing with them since I'm a tad too cranky right now. I'm sure it will all work out.

I brought home a couple of doors from a self service salvage yard the other day.

I had an idea about going into the door business.

Buy nice doors and wait until somebody needed one.

So what would a "typical" pre 1990's door sell for?

business model would work if over $125.00

Warehouse would probably be in Reno area.

I just bought a front passenger door for a W123, with electric lifts from Silver Star Recycling (www.silverstarrecycling.com). They had quite the selection, but none in my color or close (906 Silver Blue). They are in a rust-free zone in southern California and quoted me $250 for their "best door" with shipping additional to NY at $140. I'm expecting it anyday, so I'll report back on its condition.

Anyone know how difficult it is to hang a door on a W123 at home?

Alex

It's not hard with 2 people. A floor jack makes it easy. If you don't have one, a long piece of 2X4 and something to use as a fulcrum will do as well.

You just have to get it in place and snug up the bolts. Don't tighten anything until you get it set. If you snug up the bolts you can tap on the hinges to adjust the door and crank them down when everything fits just right.

I have a nice 123 front passenger door. I pulled the window, but the door itself is ok. It was cheaper the bring the door home than buy just the regulator.

Nothing else to say....

but what a dumbarse!! Good luck on finding the door. There is a junkyard in Arizona called All-Mercedes. You might try them. Harry the owner is an old coot from Germany but nice as can be. And being as it's Arizona, the door should be in good shape. The phone number is 602-268-9109.
