Has anyone here replaced the rocker panels?

I may have to replace rockers on my upcoming 111 and was looking for advice. I have access to a lift and an air grinder. That will make cutting them out possible, but is welding new skins difficult? I don't have experience welding, but I do have a family member who does. Oh yeah, I wouldn't replace the jack points, just the skins so it's structurally better and looks better. I aslo plan to coat the inside with POR15 then rubber undercoating. As goes with the outside.
Thanks
David

Do you mean sills?
Just had mine done. Didn't do it my self but was there every day over looking the process. The trick is not to cut the outer sill off totally, but to do it in stages so you can examine and repair the inner sills. Otherwise you risk the chance of body flex.
Jacking points are only around £20 so it might be worth replacing whilst there accessable. I've posted some photos here but you may need to register to view.

You do need to register to view and it's well worth it. These are great pics and very informative. I've been watching some TV shows on car restoration and rebuilding. The 'Car Is Reborn' English show with Mark Evans is very entertaining and shows some of the restoration done on the Jag XKE but due to a quirk of The Discovery Channel, I haven't seen the last few shows so I don't know what the finished product looks like. They spent twice as much as planned on restoring the chassis tub because of rust, as you are doing. Looks like there is quite a lot of surface rust as well as just plain rust on the SE.

There is a show called "American Hotrod' on Discovery and they took an old Mustang and restored it. The stripped chassis was taken in to be dipped in acid and it came back like swiss cheese. Lots of cutting and welding. The finished car looked really nice.

Good luck with the 220SE and remember, it's a 2-door and has an intrinsic value unlike the sedans.

I registered over there, well worth it if one doesn't have much experience with bodywork. That is some serious surgery heckflosse, it is good to see that kind of damage can be repaired. Good thing you didn't wait any longer, that rust was getting out of control.

thats one serious restoration!

If you had that done by a body shop, what do you think it would cost?
I would think that most people would consider it beyond worth repairing.

Did you coat the insides of the rockers before welding back on?

It was done by a specialist body shop, hence the photos of Ferraris, Daimlers and Bugatis in the back ground.
Luckly I'm quite frendly with Andy, the guy who runs the place. He worked out however that the bill should have come to over £6,000
The inner sills/chassis sections were all painted inside before fitment and then filled with waxoyl.
It was commented that the condition wasn't as bad as a lot of cars from that era. But you have to take into account British weather and the amount of salt they throw on the roads over here

One problem in the winter is to take cars to the car wash to clean them. The car wash filters the water, at least here in the US, and then injects salt water into the car's intrnals. I always wait 2 to 3 weeks before going to the car wash.

After all this work, perhaps you shouldn't drive the car in the winter.

I posted this question on another forum but didn't get a response.

Factory rustproofing from MB?

My 1982 300TD has a thick wax like substance inside the rocker panels. Was this factory applied? Seems to work pretty well as the car was driven in salt and the inside of the rockers are uncorroded.

Should a professional weld this part?

thanks!

Don't want to scare you, but the part with the arrow is part of the frame rail!
I would look into getting that fixed, but it may be a part of some other similar structural piece, but it looks rather important.

it is the frame rail... and it is important, but it seems on these cars, most of the strength is on the outside rails-jack points.. and the cab cover....

just wanted to see if anyone has repaired one...
