115 subframe crack

Carbon copy from the Diesel forum.

I've got the traditional crack in the subframe at the drivers side rear tab for lower control arm mount. Only, somebody didn't tell it that its not supposed to crack in the 115. I suppose after 400,000 miles anything can happen.

So, I don't suppose Mercedes will compensate me for anything but that doesn't mean I wont ask. Now that I've replaced ALL front end components, will the lower control arm have to be removed to weld the crack and put the gussets in?

I really hope not, I JUST replaced all the stuff, I don't want it disturbed.

If the crack is in the eyelet for the control arm, I'd say replace it. If the crack is in the body, maybe, perhaps it can be welded. A place that does good structural welding would know.

Also, how far is that spot from fuel, dripping oil and other combustables? All of that needs to be made safe.

My dad was still at Grumman when the A-6 needed it's wing structure replaced due to cracks. Seems after 25 years of carrier landings the machined aluminum didn't hold up. Not bad for a part rated for about 1/4 of the total service it received. Originally, the GAO was going to make Grumman eat the cost of the repair, but was eventually convinced that the plane had long gone past its planned date of service, that they instead awarded Grumman the repair contract and pretty much apologized for the ruckus.

At 400,000 miles, I don't think I'd hold Benz responsible for replacing a part that was indeed designed to be removed and replaced. -CTH

I'll try and post a picture soon CTH 350.

The crack is in the body of the eyelet for the LCA mount. Next to the keyed washer, a little bit up and to the right. I'll have my indie look at it. He used to fix 107's all day long back when.

Hello,
It can be welded, it happens all the time on high mileage W115 taxis around here, you have to look carefully at it, is it the tab OR the actual welding of the tab to the subframe that has cracked.
I had an Opel Manta front subframe MIG welded twenty years ago, it is still OK.

Can I send either one of you a picture of the crack in email form? Posting pictures hasn't happened yet for me on this site and with the resolution reduction, you wouldn't be able to see it very well.

Hello,
Sorry that I was not able to respond yesterday, I was underneath the 107SL looking at expensive fluid leaking out of the front pump seal on the trans
Send the pic to me and lets see if that sucker can be welded.
Have a good week and holidays

Thanks, pic is on the way. I think welding is going to have to do.
