Talking 220s 4.5?

First, let me respectfully request that all heckflosse purists run from this thread, as it may cause some intestinal discomfort.

Okay, here's my line of reasoning. Someone pull me over to the curb if any of my presumptions are incorrect:

1. The w111 sedan and coupe were designed to accept identical drivetrains;

2. The w111 coupe eventually housed the 3.5 and 4.5 V8 under its (albeit reworked) hood; therefore

3. The w111 sedan is a viable candidate for an MB V8 engine transplant!

A fintail with 0-60 times under 8 seconds and 130 mph top end? Bring on those unsuspecting 420SEL owners!

Won't fit -- brake booster will fill the same space as the rear of the left valve cover. It was moved on the later chassis to accomodate the V8.

Well, some '61 and most '62 and '63 Fintails had single circuit front discs with a separate remote mounted ATE brake servo on the right inner fender, near the radiator and only a small brake master cylinder on the firewall with no attached vacuum booster to foul a V8. And if there's interference with the servo or battery after V8 installation, they could easily be relocated somewhere else - the trunk maybe?

One drawback would be the fuel tank, IIRC the 220 has a 14 gallon tank, a 13MPG 4.5 would give you a 185 mile range

Do you think anyone contemplating this project is worried about practicality or gas mileage? Even less practical - awhile back, someone posted photos from an M100 meet, of a 220SE to 6.3 conversion!

If it was mine, I'd drive the hell out of it, stopping for gas on a daily basis would be a pain... If we were all practical we would be driving 5 year old Hondas, not 25+ year old MB's and running into to occasional "that part is NLA" or "WOW, the list price is now $623.14 on that part" at the parts counter....

After all the hassles involved in a 220 - V8 engine transplant, stuffing in a bigger gastank shouldn't be a big deal.

Brake booster?

Shoot most of you have been around long enough to have driven rigs w/o a booster.

That's why the seats in most of the older cars were broken or tilting to one side or the other when you sat in them.

I say the condition of the seat in those vehicles, is a testament to the excitement that they the driver had in them.

Heck who hasn't enjoyed locking up a four drum brake vehicle w/o a booster once or twice?

Actually, for the first 2 or 3 years, only the Fintail S and SE had power assisted 4-wheel drums. On the base 220b power-assist was optional, so maybe that should be the first choice for a V8 engine swap. And 4-wheel drums aren't all that bad - as long as you can get them to lock up, they'll stop almost anything (at least the first time!) And, on the earliest cars, no power steering to get in the way either.
And if you can't find a bigger Fintail fuel tank to feed that transplanted V8, just drop an extra tank in the trunk (but don't cut any speaker holes in that rear firewall!)

I've thought about engine swaps - first about stuffing a 190SL engine in my underpowered Ponton 180b, later about finding a W123 240D or 300D, with a blown motor, and dropping in a small-block Ford V8. The small-block Ford is fairly light and, unlike most GM and Chrysler V8s, the distributor is in front, where it's easy to service and won't interfere with the firewall during a swap. And there's tons of performance mods availible for the Ford.
Let us know how good the seller's 'Ford to Fintail' installation is.
