Newbie Question 280

i HAVE HUST BOUGHT 1 1976 280 sedan ORIGINALLY FOR INTERIOR PARTS FOR AN 76 240D. The car is in good shape as far as the body and brakes but the engine is totally disassembled and has been sitiing for a while, although the cylinder head has been rebuilt. The owner sais the timing chain broke and bent two valves, explaining the rebuilt head. I would like to fix this car up as the the body is so much better than my 240D. it has a 4 barrel solex carb. Any advice on this project? In MD for historic tags I won't need emissions inspections so how much of that is neccesary for the car to run properly? The car turns over well by hand and is not frozen up. All the parts seem to be here as well as a full gasket set. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Haynes manual that covers this engine is actually for the 123 body. It is pretty good for engine assembly. It's title is "280 123 Series 1977 - 1981".

The basic engine assembly is fairly straightforward. You need to pay attention to get the cam and distributor gears aligned, and you should plan on replacing all the slide rails.

Out of the ordinary tools:

17 mm and 14 mm hex-bit sockets for the chain tensioner
Impact puller for slide rails
Special wrench to adjust valves

The 1976 cars had a lot of emissions plumbing around the carb, which needs to be in place for the car to run right. You may need to get a MB M110 Engine Service Manual to figure it out.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I would scrap it out. That was one of the worst models MB ever produced. IIRC shop time is about 7 hours to change all the coolant hoses, and you need every minute of it. The next worst car was the 74 or 75 230.
