custom interior
I have an Idea for my 123 1978 300D. My dash is cracked and has a plastic dash cap on it. I have another old cracked dash that I got for almost nothing. I would like to incorporate more wood into this new dash. For example I am going to make wood to go above the bullseye heat vents as well as around the defrost vents, and up and around the instrument cluster. My question is for the rest of the top of the dash I would like to cover it in some high density closed cell foam, such as what someone would use to make scupted doors on a hot rod. Then I was thinking I'd just buy some blue mercedes vinyl from upholstery world and cement that on top of the foam. My question is will the same vinyl for the seats work on the dash???

No reason it wouldn't. However, you may want to stick with black rather than the same color as the seats, I believe the dash was only black on the W123. Probably wrong, as someone will surely point out.
I know the dash came in several colors (all dark) on the W108/9. Peter

hey psfred, I've heard of you because my friend here in fort wayne has a 560sel and you helped him work on it while in town I beleive. Anyway you're right all the dashes I've seen have been dark in color. My interior is the darker blue color and my dash matches that. I'd like to have an "upholstered" look to the dash and I figure if the seats hold up to sun AND being sat on why would a dash not hold up just as well. Anyway thanks for your advice and I'll send you pics when this is done (christmas break is coming so hopefully I can get some things done)

Some things to ponder before any radical dashboard modifications - in these cars, the padding thickness, resilience and location was designed for crash safety.
You should consider how changes in padding thickness and materials or additional wood trim may affect this safety factor. Happy Motoring, Mark

I am aware of this and I will actually be adding MORE padding in most places. Anybody have any knowledge as to whether seat or door panel vinyl can withstand the beating down of the sun that a dashboard receives?

deferr, it was Tim's 280SEL 4.5, not a 560SEL that Peter came up and helped while he was here.
Thanks David
