Question Control Arm Rubber Bumpers

Hi all,

I am trying to replace the rubber bumpers under the upper control arms on my 1973 280SE 4.5. I'm having a devil of a time getting the new ones in place. Do I need to loosen the upper control arm enough to swing it out of the way? Or...? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I've spent 3 hours trying to get the one in place with no luck.

TIA

Maybe try lubing it with silicone spray? I assume you're talking about the control arm stop? Silicone will help it in greatly.
Thanks
David

Unhappy

Thanks, David. I think I mean the control arm stop--the ones that are like chamfered cubes, rather than the egg-shaped ones.

Silicone might help, but I can't really get it fully in place, so I think my problem is more basic. I once spent 5 hours trying to replace a shifter bushing. I am beginning to think this is one of those jobs. I think I was desperately hoping to learn some trick.

Brian

If you're still collecting tricks, here's one for installation of the shift bushings. **************.com sells a 'kit' but you could replicate it with a trip to the hardware store. Seems self explanatory...

Anyway, on with your regularly scheduled programming...

Putting a jack under the engine and lifting it

Not sure if that would solve your problem, just a guess.

I presume your car has the kingpin suspension and you're referring to the rubber bumper that the upper arm rests on when you have the front of the car jacked up and the wheel/suspension is hanging. If so, you need to place a jack under the lower control arm and apply just enough pressure to lift the upper arm off the bumper. Then you can unbolt the outer bushing of the upper arm and should be able swing the arm up far enough for clearance.

Happy Motoring, Mark
