Wink Positioning of A/C idler pulley on 116

I need to reinstall an A/C idler pulley on my 76 450SEL and since it is not a tensioner part and just screws into the block -- how do you position this pulley properly ?? Does anyone know this in the group?? Thanks, Ben Carter

If it's like the 116/280, you loosen the bolt in the center of the pulley and adjust the tension with the small bolt on the side, then tighten the pulley bolt to hold it.

The bolt in the center of the pulley just holds the pulley on the arm?! The large attachment bolt holds it on the block, so it would seem that just moving the arm until the belt is tight would create tension, but why not leave the whole assy. in place and adjust tension by moving the compressor into position ??

Squeaking Idler Pulley

Hi Chuck,

I finally figgered out the scary intermittent noise on my front left bank. Some spray lube quiets down what must be a dry bearing on this idler pulley. While I have not removed it, it does only look like only 1 bolt holds it to the block, but may have the adjuster bolt hidden in the muck around it.

Two questions:
1 - is that roller bearing replacable or lubricatable or must I replace the whole thing?
2 - do they come in one- and two-bolt models?

I believe all M116 and M117 engines use the same tensioner. The one I found in the junkyard had an allen-head bolt, the one on mine has a standard head. I do not believe replacing JUST the bearing is possible, you must replace the whole idler pulley. This used to be like a $20 part. I do see it's now listed as $56.

The arm has ONE bolt - the main bolt for attatchment is also the adjustment bolt.

I just took a look at the 560. This does not appear to have an adjuster, you just pry on the bracket and tighten the bolt. It looks like the pulley is removable - there is probably an clip of some sort holding it on.

Chuck: The pulley is bolted to the arm, easily removeable, but IIRC, the pulley is stamped together around the bearing - no retaining ring to pull it out.

Ok, thanks for the followups. Ron at Germanstar quoted me $20 for the pulley. Is there a good reason to replace the bolt, too?? It may have a special strength and taper to seat against the bearing and hold the pulley, but $8 for a bolt?

Unless your old bolt rusted/snapped off, no need to replace it.

If you made a Tofu flavored Snapple, would it be a SNAFU?

Tom,

Calling oneself an AW is not PC IMO! Please make amends ASAP.
