Its done!

I picked up the car yesterday and its pretty much complete. There are a couple of things that I need to take it back for (central locking issues and brake line mounts) but all said and done, I am very very pleased.

See http://www.alabbasi.net go to cars and follow the link to the 450sel 6.9.

Hope you enjoy.

Looks great.

I've enjoyed following your updates every step of the way.

You've made a nice driver out of a junkyard dog.

Magnificent

I love the color combo too. Always thought that dark green interior was really special in the 116's.

Interior

Funny you say that, When the car was a metalic green I thought the interior was quite boring but it has come out nicely with the silver exterior.

Really nice. First rate all the way.
How many of the "naysayers" have weighed in on the car?
I finally got my central locking stuff done and now the locks snap shut.

Too bad the locking issue wasn't addressed when the car interior was in pieces.

I solved my locking problems searching here as well as using the 116.org
manuals that are online. Found in the 'interesting links' section of Vintage.

Good going.

That is an amazing transformation! Quite impressive. May I inquire how much it ran to complete the restoration? or at the very least how much the repainting ran? Mine is in need of a repaint and was curious how much to expect repainting to cost.

I said early on that I bet this would cost more than a 6.9 in much better condition (initially). Did you fix the smoking engine issue and any other mechanical issue(s) that may have sprung up?

If so, was the total cost of everything (car + bodywork + mechanical work) in excess of what a much better 6.9 would have cost you initally?

If so, then the long-standing theory is true. If not, then you sure made out like a bandit!

Any way you look at it, the car is BEAUTIFUL and I would love to have my classic Benz look that sweet!

6.9 Resto

I would beg to differ on the restoration cost. it actually cost me a lot less then anything in the shape that this car is currently in. The smoking engine issue went away. It was sitting at a 45 degree angle on the trailer from MI to GA during snow season. I think it was just water getting in. It smoked for about 15 mins and cleared up. It runs like a train. It does have a pretty bad vibration right now that I need to address when the car is braking. Thats next on the list.

Warped rotors? I had mine recently replaced since they were worn but the supplier shipped old stock so I too have a foot massager when braking. Just haven't had time to take it back to the shop to have it done.

I don't know why the age of rotos would affect how fast they warp. Are you sure your rear rotors aren't warped? I bet that they've been warped but you didn't notice it with the fronts being warped since they would have been much worse. Mine were on my SDL. Of course they weren't as bad as the fronts, but they were. I had them turned now they're as good as new. It can be difficult to determine where such vibrations are coming from. Even though you'd think it was the fronts, it could very well be the back ones.

Thanks
David

Any car with a history of warping rotors needs one of two things confirmed....#1 are you a brake rider..meaning do you apply the brakes for excesively long periods or rest your foot on it or #2 find the caliper that is not floating freely...odds are extremely high one or both of those conditions are occuring..

The rotors and pads are all new all the way around, the old ones were scored and in rough shape. The shimmying in the pedal didn't occur until the new pads and rotors were put in. With everything being new it should be perfect.

The PO was a #1 with all of the brake dust on the bundts. I am not a #1 even in LA. It's a 6.9 of all things so it's designed to have the right pedal just resting on the kickdown switch It is posible that condition #2 exists but there is no apparenly dragging or pulling. Would that be a symptom? There is cyclic pulsating proportional to the speed of the wheels.

Vibration issue almost solved

I replaced the front rotors , bearings and pads and the vibration was just as severe if not worse. I am not kidding I tried to slow the car down on GA-400 from 80 and the star on the hood bounced all over the place that it turned into a haze. It was that voilent.

So I had the car up on the ramp and we checked the suspension. On a whole everything felt tight, the steering, wheels etc. We felt the tires and it looks like the side belts were broken on three of the four tires. I had those replaced and the car rides a lot better and stops a lot better. There is still a pulse from the brake pedals which I suspect is the rear discs so these are now on order.

Other work done includes:
New plugs
New rotor
New spark plug wires
Coolant flush
ATF filter and fluid change (made a world of difference).

I still need to sort out the A/C. I have a 25lb Cylinder of R406a in the trunk and its as hot as hell in the car. There is a massive leak coming from the front , but its so tight in there I have no idea where its coming from. Is there an R12 leak detector that I can get?
