Interesting observation about my 450

Hey everyone,

Today was the first oil change after the timing chain replacement. I found a goldmine in my oil. Just the filter housing had tons and tons of little shavings everywhere. Never had this happened before so right away I thought the chain worn in. Is this a possibility, I assume that the chain wears in as it loosens up a bit but how much should be allowed?

Also since I bought the car a year ago exactly, it was burning oil on deceleration to a considerable degree but with daily driving that seems to have gone away to the point where the engine ate almost a whole quart in 3000 miles. This seems too good to be true but it is. Do you think the whole higher mileage oils work this good?

the "goldmine" will probably be brass shavings from gears or bearing races.

thicker oils will make it use slightly less, but addatives will make a difference too.

Mine had shavings in there the last few times, with the most recent one being far less than before. I believe mine are from the rocker arms. They're silver in color, not brass. If yours are brass, there's not many places I can imagine it coming from. Valve guides stick out foremost to me.

Mine also smoked a LOT on deceleration but some mixture adjustment and a driving cut that a ton. I haven't noticed it since I put the new chain in, either. It had sat for a while but I dunno if that has anything to do with it. This most recent change, I put in QS semi-synthetic high-horsepower 10w-30 blend. I had used QS high milage last fillup, and Mobil Drive Clean Plus the time before.

I'm hoping the timing chain solves the issue of what seems to be too much gas diluting my oil. I THINK I used a quart at MOST in the last 2K miles (between changes).

I think it was a combination of mostly silver particles and very few brass ones. In the last 2 weeks or so the car ran on the lower portion of the dipstick. I didnt have time to reup it. That could have damaged it some right at start up. I also found that in that last 2 weeks, it had trouble starting as in lots of cranking and then finally slowly would everything fire up. Now with the new oil it cranks half a crank and start right up strong. Could that have anything to do with it. I am also running 10w30 castrol Higher Mileage at the moment, I had some 5w30 normal castrol in there before. I wouldnt know a difference between them.

Oh also when I did the timing chain, I cranked over the engine twice by hand without oil coming to the upper portions and then another twice to make sure everything was ok. Thats 4 times marry-go-round, would that affect it?
